Silkie thread!

Are you sure your hen is a buff? It's my understanding that darker colour in the moor cap indicates ' partridge ' . Our buffs are buff all over and even coloured to the skin.
I think that the lighting makes her neck/chest look more 'red' in the pic then it is in person..this pic was taken at dusk with a not so good camera.. I will get more pics in the morning to post if you dont mind checking them out.. Id hate for her not to be a buff after all the searching I did before finding this girl..

May just be the lighting. There is a buff Silkie thread on this site.

Okay i checked her no blood. I moistened the exposed membrane with a paper towel. Her beak is out. I kept the moisture down by her beak so she didnt get any in her nostrils. The paper towel was just damp enough to make the membrane transparent. She under momma bald chest. I hope she makes it. Rookie mistake. I know better than to do things like this. Grrr. The other egg is pipped and looks like a zip is starting. I left it alone. No movement. Im worried they are going to shrink wrap since I looked them over. I feel like an idiot.

Most of us have made that mistake, let our excitement get the better of us. Just let nature take it's course. Read that thread, Sally is a legend !

Thanks. I read it. It definitely says dont tear the membrane. Too late for that. Since she is under a broody, will I still have to keep rewetting the membrane? Can she hatch on her own with the top of the shell off? The inner membrane is still on her. The outer shell and membrane right alond the air cell are gone. I had to take more off to check her bleed.

The black one has tons of feathers. The yellowish colored one (supposed to be white but not sure that is correct) has very little. I pick her up and cuddle her a few times a day
and she sounds sort of like she is purring. How long can I hold her? I actually put on a large sweatshirt and tuck her in the arm by my wrist just having her head out and she
seems content and will doze off for a bit. Thank you for answering me. I know you all must get really tired of us newbies. By the way we have two full grown Plymouth rock
hens given to us 3 weeks ago outside doing wonderful that are a year old . And then 8 babies bought from a local feed store. Six Bantams and the two silkies. I was told that we needed bigger
hens as silkies do not lay many eggs and they are small. I will for sure be learning as I go. I am in love with them all from the first glance.

Silkies def lay smaller eggs..We just got a few layers just for the bigger eggs..My one Silkie lays every day like clockwork..the new hen is either not laying ro hiding her eggs..still up in the air on that one.. I handle mine from day 1...as long as she is lept warm, you shouldnt have any issues..Im not sure what the temp by your wrist would be, but as long as she is not chirpy loudly, Id say she is warm enough.. I think that the major issues with Silkies is them going broody and that takes away form their laying, but I think they are nice little layers, just not of huge eggs..

She may be a cross if she doesnt have feathered feet..what color are her legs? They should be black(or may look like a dark shiny blue)..I consider myself a newbie as well..Im here to learn like everyone else--this is a GREAT site for any information on all things chicken.. Can you post pics of the babies? If there is a huge size difference, they may be different ages or like I said, possibly that they are not full Silkies? Pictures are always helpful--but mostly I just like seeing the pics of the babies...lol
