They hatch eggs not as many as a larger layer but I think the average is 3 eggs a week. Mine have yet to lay but any day nowand yes you can eat them. They are just smaller.
This is probably a stupid question... I have not had silkies before now. Do they lay eggs as much as the other chickens? Do you eat their eggs or just for hatching? ?
Mine lay everyday that they are not broody. Lol, yes they are good layers and their eggs do increase in size as they get older. When a recipe requires an egg I use 2 silkie eggs.
Question- what other breeds do you keep with your silkies?
I have 4 silkies, 2 buffs, they all get along get along great. Thinking of adding some bigger girls (as chicks) when/if one of my girls goes broody. But I worry about the silkies getting picked on.
I let my silkies hatch and raise my large fowl. They are currently raising Wyandotte and sussex.
