Silkie thread!

Just had to share pics of my sweet lil Silver partridge baby. She's about 7 weeks old now. I love this funky crest stage, its so funny. Her color is coming in more prominent now so I could finally tell what kind she was, and it's determined that she's a silver partridge :) She's such a sweetie.

Umm. They are all the same age. All nine weeks. They lived together all their lives. BTW I just bought 2 more chicks today (not silkies) and we gave the roosters to the farm. She now lives with 3 LF pullets that are all nice to her and NO roosters. I can't have roosters in town and I wouldn't keep 4 roosters with 4 pullets.

I hear the same story over and over - "but they've been together since day-old chicks." However RIRs and similar LF dual purpose breeds far exceed the growth of bantams and will get pushy with them either by accident or on purpose as they grow into adults. By 18 months to 2 years old the LF heavy 6-7 lb fowl will get mean or pushy with 2.5 lb Silkies or the Silkies learn how to hide and run from them. My two Partridge Silkies were raised with same day-old LF and were mercilessly chased and had to hide from the faster growing LF pullets. They had to come out of hiding to sneak their feed and water and scurry back to hiding again. I had no control to keep them out of harm's way as a friend was raising them for me. By 5-1/2 months we had our house remodel done and a coop finally erected and rescued the Silkies from their harried existence finally. Just passing along our experience for info only. In small quarters it's not good to mix LF with non-flying bantams - not an equal match in flock politics.

I also use a microfiber cloth to get the crest feathers so I don't get water in their eyes/beak/nostrils. If they have some food/dirt in their crest, I use a nail brush and softly try to get it out, always going from root to tip. Works well for me so far.

I use warm water at the base of the feather crest and work it loose between 2 fingers so I can feel if the quills are getting tugged on that I can't feel with the washcloth. Our key word here is "softly" and gently whatever the method. Thanks for the reply.

I love my white silkies but I am so jealous of all your guys colors. I just finished building my incubator. I'm getting ready to do a test hatch. If all goes well ill be ordering some eggs. Yay.
