Silkie thread!

NEED ADVICE.

I have a hen sizzle who has tonight gone broody. Been on eggs since 10am. But 6 hours after an egg was la7d. Could my other hen lay it. But the only other hen had chicks who are 1.5mo. Idk what's going on. But I was getting bad eggs out. Since I've noticed last few days she sleeps on them but never stayed at night. 14 eggs were laid. 3 were rotten. I candle the other to see if they were rotten and I see 2 have nice veins and heartbeat. I'm so c9nfused. Why would she still lay eggs....Ahhhhhhhhh lol
I have broody hens right now too and I don't even know which hens are laying. There are 4 hens in the pen and they all lay in the broody hen piles. I just candle them occasionally and throw out the bad ones. They are all at different stages of development, so once a couple hatch (within 2-3 day period but no longer), I just take the other eggs away from them (and move them to the incubator) because otherwise they want to keep sitting on the eggs waiting for the others to hatch (instead of tending to the new babies).

It may have been the last egg in the chamber. Hatching can occur over a 2-3 day period so I'd leave it with her. I try to block the broody off so that no one else can lay more eggs in with the clutch. That way you don't end up with eggs at staggered stages of development . And you get to collect and eat the other eggs.

its been a while since ive been on BYC. I have a lot to catch up on. I thought I would update everyone on how my baby silkie chicks are going (well they aren't really babies anymore
tongue.png
) so my babies are now about four months old (that's about 16 weeks I think) and ive gotten only two roosters (
wee.gif
) out of the eight chicks that hatched! im so happy about that, I was worried that I would get heaps of roosters. so three of the silkies are black and the other five are the that red/orange colour (I forget what its called
tongue.png
) two of the blacks surprisingly turned out to be bearded, which im also very happy about because they are my first ever bearded silkies :) one of the roosters is black and the other orange/red and they already have started crowing!!! (is it unusually for them to be crowing at this age? I've never had rooster crow this young) and they sound so funny and cute! and I think that's all I have to tell you guys right now....

here are some pics:

the chicken in the front of this pic is my black rooster, he is also one of the bearded ones

these two here are like twins they are always together and look alike. the one on the left is the other bearded silkie (you cant really see it)

and lastly is a big family photo of all of them :) the chicken on the far right is my other rooster and beside him is the black rooster :)

I love the silkies :)

Here is my baby silkie I found today. She/he is the sweetest thing! Now.... This baby hatched from a polish egg. Lol. Ik it was a polish egg bc I have seen my polish lay big white eggs. I have no clue but I'll just wait and see I guess! :D

I don't have pure silkies so my babies don't have a big vault. My silkie rooster is crossed with a leghorn (I think) so he doesn't have a crest.

He/she likes to sleep in my slipper

Every Silkie is a joy but I especially love the bearded ones - although both bearded and non-bearded are acceptable in the U.S. Your little troop is so adorable!

I have come to the conclusion after 3 years of backyard chickens that in spite of all their broodiness they are the MOST delightful breed to raise - sweet, easy to handle, hardy in all temps, not a terribly noisy lot (even the roos), big eggs for a bantam breed and prolific when not moulting/brooding, don't fly out of the yard - they can jump really well but those fluffy bodies keep them from escaping by flight. Just a dream breed! My small backyard flock (we are zoned for only 5 hens and no roos) is always built around my 2 Silkies. If a LF doesn't play nice around my fluff balls then they're rehomed - we've re-homed 3 LF that were assertive/aggressive toward the gentler Silkies. The only LF that has existed nicely and sweetly with my Silkies is my avatar (an APA Blue Wheaten Ameraucana - probably similar to what the U.K. calls "Araucana"). For more non-broody egg layers we are trying the docile LF Breda to add next Spring to bring our total hens up to 5 allowed. They are lightweight, non-broody, and considered docile so should be a good blend with the 3 hens I have now. We'll see.

Love your toodling Silkies in a farm yard setting! If you free-range them they love snoozing/hiding under farm equipment like your tractor, or under rose bushes, or under benches or woodpiles. Mine come out of hiding with all sorts of spider webs and debris caught in their crests and beards LOL!

Well I had a broody silkie and wanted olive egger chicks but didn't want to do the work.

A match made in heaven! After one day getting to know each other the babies are all tucked in for the night.
