Silkie thread!

Well I had my first Moma hen attack on a just hatched chick. Thank you God I got there when I did or she would have killed it. I think because it didn't hatch under her. Here it is when first picking it up I seen a wound on the underside up towards the wing. I washed the blood off best I could and put it back under the Moma hen that is taking good care of it. The one that pecked it has been removed. This happened yesterday. Today it looked like the feathers didn't fluff on some of the underside and around the one eye. And it looked like the one eye was closed most of the way but when I took her out to put medicine on her wound she opened it good and the eye looks ok. I put Vetericyn around the eye and on the wound and gave her some drops of water with Rooster booster vitamins and electrolytes in it and she ate a few bites of food softened with the vitamin water. She seems spunky and lively. Sure hope she's going to be ok.

Oh poor baby, doesn't take much when they are that little, so lucky you were around. Just watch for any signs of fresh blood and remove the chick if you see any. Even the other little ones will peck at it.

I will keep a close eye on it, so far it's the only one that has hatched and the Mom hen that is with it is good to it. Really hope it makes it. Such a cute little chick.

Is there such a thing as an ugly chick?? Lol Good luck to you and the little one!! Glad u had an extra mom on hand!!

I got 3 little blue Silkies a few weeks ago. They r so sweet!! Thing is... They r ALL 3 feathering exactly the same! Combs all look the same!! I cannot find a single difference between any of them. Which makes me think, I either have 3 cockerels or 3 pullets!! Lol Its gonna take FOREVER to even have an idea of their sex! :/

Am I the ONLY one that wanted a too and got a hen??

Yes, you probably are!

BTW, I love all these pictures. I have 4 silkies, 2 black and 2 mostly white. Or they would be mostly white if they didn't free range around clay all day long. The white hens on here are so white, and mine both have an orange tinge...LOL

Aww hope she/he feels better soon! I've had a broody momma do that too. Well I think it was the mom. I had 3 broodies in one spot... Ughhhhhh Lol! Well they hatched one OE and he was safe, but my part cochin baby was laying away from them with a bloody face. I ran and picked up the baby. We set up a brooder and the side of his face was pecked. I'm not sure if one of the mommas did it or what but I wasn't letting them have the baby. So I removed the other baby roo. Then they hatched a Japanese. But the wouldn't sit on her. My 2 broody (part) Cochins were great moms! But the jap mom was a little mean. So the 3 babies were raised by us!

The moms weren't stressed by me removing the babies.

Hope your baby recovers! :)
