Silkie thread!

I think you are right! I kept looking at different breeds trying to figure out what she was but never looked at seabright's. She is very skittish and hard to catch. If anyone can do it my daughter can though. I'll try and post close up pictures of her. ETA Daughter is fast lol
Can you get us a pic of her comb. From what I'm seeing hers doesn't look like a Seabright. I agree on the Buff Laced, but the bomb will tell for sure which breed.

I'll send daughter on a mission to catch her ;)

ETA
Her legs have a blueish tint to them that doesn't show up well in pictures.

I tried to get a picture straight on but every time I got close she moved so it's blurry. Not sure these will be any help.

I took a video because you can see the comb better.

Omg my first check to hatch is the cutest.

What color? Because mom is black sizzle. Dad could be a calico roo, partridge roo or white. My rooster is a splash.. but I don't think he 8 fertile

While the bigger two duke it out for treats Johnnie-bird traded patience for meal worms :)
The bigger two are both around 16 weeks I think, and I can't decide if they are just establishing pecking order or if I have sneaky roos... they have been together around a week. So far only girly noises, and combs are flat and dark. I guess I won't stop wondering until I see eggs!

Ahh Suz im glad im in good company.. !
With People who dont think im looney. The biggest question they ask is...How many chickens do you have now? (With a horrified look on their face.) Heck just about 40..somewheres in there...well maybe 50..but not much more than that...and THATs with the 10 week olds OH.... and then the 4 month olds and 3 month olds..oh well maybe 60. but thats all...:D

Im sitting on my hands...I am DYING t o incubate eggs. I have a terrible time cant hatch but a few . but i always  think.... this time it will work well!!.. but never does .
Of course my  splash silkie hen  laid a bunch of eggs after being broody all summer ..now I sit  with eggs and too late to try!!
By  the way can Silkies lay 2 a day?
Seems like she has a lot and didnt seem that long since i looked in  the nest .a few days NOT 11 days! !

Why does she bury some in the straw Anyone know?

10 MINUTES LATER....SHE LAID 4 MORE! I GOTTA SET THEM...!!FIRING UP THE BATOR AS WE SPEAK.CAVED:idunno .

I'm a "crazy chicken lady" in the making! May 2013 when I bought my first 5 laying chicks at the feed store I was told to watch out, their addictive. I thought I'd be happy with 5. Then I met my silkie Marbles! Got her a week later. If she didn't become hawk food in November I wouldn't have just gotten 7 awesome silkies from Bobbi Porto... And 24 eggs from Sheri Mekiner and hatched 5 (I know that's a really bad hatch rate, but I have never done it before, and I was at a 4 day horse show the last week of incubation so my husband was left in charge) so 5 turned into 17! I get defensive when people ask me how many I have, I live in a busy shoreline area with lots of people. Having 5 chickens is cute... Having 17 is loco! But I love them all!

The feed should not have any sour or moldy smells about it . There are feeds on the market here that contain oregano and thyme and they smell like a pizza shop, some have lashings of molasses added. When feeding grains I try to keep it as natural as possible, not cracked or ground just plain old whole grain. I buy premium micro - pellets and have seen a marked difference in health, feather condition and egg production. I guess if you aren't happy with the quality at your feed store , let your legs do the talking. That's what I did. :)

I looked at Bobbi Portos website on care for chicks and it says to feed them 20-22% protein chick feed. I can't seem to find that at any stores around here. TSC, Agway, or even the local. What do you suggest for % for chick and young silkies?

Thank you very much Janelle! Lutz is just a few miles down the road from me. I will look her up. Thanks again! :-D

You won't regret it! I love every one of the babies she gave me! They get more typy and beautiful every day!

I feed mine Game Bird Starter Grower. Its 24%. I keep them on it and mix in a little scratch when they are older.

I started out with 5 hens and 2 roos in a LF layer flock. Now there is 25 in that flock. I kept adding one or two here and there. I have 50 bantam of which 20 are Silkie/Sizzle. Chicken math... That's not counting the chicks that hatched out this year. I just put 4 eggs in the incubator from my splash hen and blue roo and I have a hen on 5 eggs now. I did talk to the FFA teacher at the high school about donating my extra chicks.

I feed a game bird finisher micro-pellet 22% mixed 50/50 with a mixed grain. Once the birds grow out to 24 weeks they should only be getting 16% protein.
Remember that game bird products are designed to grow the birds out fast for the table, without much thought as to what effect it might be having on their internal organs. If you feed a high protein diet over an extended period of time you are bound to run in to trouble further down the track. Visceral gout and pulpy kidney , to name a few.
It's quite common for people to feed a ' feather conditioner ' when their birds are molting, but usually only for a short period of time and then switch back to their regular feed.
