Silkie thread!

At 3.5 - 4 months old, do you trim their crest and beards? Or do you tape them up? They are so fluffy and I can see that their beards are getting in their eyes. I feel like that's so painful, but I don't want to keep trimming them if what naturally happens is that the beards grow long enough to get past their eyes. In other words, if I keep trimming them short all the time, they will always grow to a length where they have no place else to go but their eyes until I trim again. But if I let them grow out, will the fluff get long enough to not touch their eyes?

If the weather is 75-80* during the day and down to 60* at night. When can I put my babies (frizzled sizzles that will be 5 weeks old Thursday) out with my 3.5 - 4 month old silkies?

Here is the newest Roo in my teenage silkie flock from Bobbi P. Meet Pickles my porcelain sweetheart. Born May 18,2014. At 3 1/2 months old he's turning out pretty nice!
He's fabulous, LOVE him!

Just sharing some of my new peepers! I've had a black rooster over blue and splash hens for what seems like forever, so these 2 splash chicks were quite the surprise! This means either my Sizzle rooster is blue instead of black or my blue cockerel has finally started breeding. I'm secretly hoping for splash Sizzles

Adorable !!! I love their little hairdos!
Silkie momma up the road is currently setting eggs for me. These will be my first and I am so excited!!

Thank you. I have heard of this, but haven't found it in my local stores yet. How long do you keep them on the game bird starter?
I feel like my silkies are too skinny. Under all that gorgeous fluff I can feel Brest bones on a few. (Not all of them) They are always stuffing their face so I know their eating, just not sure the typical chick starter is working for all of them. I am so in love with these babies that I want them to be as healthy and happy as I can.

We have ' sardine Friday ' here. Every Friday I cook rice or pasta , while it's hot I mix 5-6 raw eggs in and 3 -4 tins of sardines in olive oil. This feeds 40-50 birds and you should see them devour it. 24% protein will do irreparable organ damage and I have had a roo with gout. My hubby bought him for my birthday . He was 2 years old and the damage was already done. His feet were so fat and it wasn't long before he went lame and never walked again. Gout is the result of high protein and too much calcium.

Warning. Graphic pics.

that is a fabulous idea! I've tried to give sardines to the chickens before (not silkies) and they were all afraid of them and wouldn't eat them except for the turkeys, but I swear the turkeys will eat anything! How much rice/pasta do you use?

The chickens will try and steal your hamburger though lol

I use 6 cups of uncooked rice in the microwave or 2 bags of generic pasta. I also use generic sardines. Even the dogs chase me for it. My dogs love sardines and the oil is good for feathers and fur. Sardines are quite high in sodium so just once a week.

Hi everyone! I want to know if I could feed this to my Silkie and other chickens.
Also I want to know what kind of caterpillar it is and if it's a "good" kind that doesn't hurt anything.

It's longer then my pinkie finger and has a horn.

The chickens are the only ones afraid of the sardines lol. They love rice and pasta though so maybe I can hide it in there!
