Thank you :) I'm in Oregon.

Well my white silkie hen Dolly got a new indoor home. Her depth perception still isn't right and her pupils are still dilated and unresponsive. I think she is mostly blind. I think it has to be a head injury. Her balance is fine and she lays her egg everyday. She eats and drinks once she figures out the depth of the dishes. She tends to put her whole head in the water dish getting a drink though. She stretches her neck up a lot and seems to be trying to see. She also has a curled foot from birth, so she gets around slow anyway. Today I noticed her eyes are squinty. I have no Idea whats going on other than head trauma. Shes been this way for a month now. She also is having a little molt. She has her friend Ashes in with her for now. Ashes got a little over loved by the boys, so shes in side getting her feathers back.

Poor girl :( hope she gets better.

Can there be such a thing as a "Frizzled Sizzle"? A Sizzle is a Frizzled Silkie...so all Sizzles are Frizzled.
Fo Rizzle my Nizzle!!
Maybe you have found what Jerry Feeds....do you get it in Harrisonville Mo??
Lol

No, it comes from Alabama. Its either Faithway or Southern States.

Hi -
I have two young 15wk silkie roos (I assume - they are both crowing!) that are beautiful, but I am not sure which colors they are. I would like to breed them next spring with my white silkie hen, and wondering as well what color results I might with this mix? How many can they hatch successfully? I know they are good mothers! :) I have been looking for another silkie hen, especially black, but no luck yet. We just LOVE them!! These three silkies live with 13 other large breed chickens (they are all 8wks old) that they have been raised with. I am attaching photos for any thoughts!!

Thanks so much in advance!
Valerie :)

p.s. Also, any thoughts as to whether these two roos can live successfully with both a blue ameraucana roo AND blue orpington roo? Total of 12 hens (one is white silkie hen) and 4 roos = 16 total in coop. These other two roos are part of a group of 12 that are 8wks and moved into coop recently, and we are hoping to keep them, but are waiting to see how it goes. I thought if one had to go it would be the orpington as he is huge, but we like them both. I am also wondering if having one bantam hen in there will be unsafe for her? She grew up with the buff brahma and the two silkie roos since days old, but just got mixed with the other 8wk standard breeds - she is pecking them and bossing them around with no issue, so maybe OK? She lived in the coop first though! Like I said, I've been looking for another silkie hen, but do I need another bantam hen period? Our coop is 8x8 with LOTS of high roosts and have very large rotating free range areas. They all seem to get along well so far! My 15wk brahma is naturally the queen, but not bugging the others too much - I think the sheer number of younger ones helps a LOT!

Photos 1 and 2 are Daffodil, and 3 and 4 are Lavender. Needless to say with the names, we originally thought they both were hens!! LOL.

p.s. If anyone lives in Vermont, and has a couple of hens to sell, please let me know!!! :)))

How much time do they spend in the Coop?
16 birds in an 8x8 is going to be putting those Roosters in each other's face Often.
Are they just sleeping there or full time?

Seems to be common lately on how many Roosters together. The only real answer I believe is..."you'll soon know". When I brought 2 roosters home late one night, I put one in the Quarantine Coop and one in the run. Figuring on finding a different Quarantine spot for the other in the morning as these were both mature fellas that had never known each other. Imagine my surprise in the morning when the Rooster from the Coop had a escaped into the run with the other and they were looking like old buddies!!
I had another young guy that had been raised up in a flock of 15 or so. The first time he tried to get frisky with a hen, the two older Roosters ran him out of the coop and never let him back in!!
There's so many "what ifs" I think the best answer is to attempt to integrate, watch and see how they do. Then as they mature, especially in their first spring...keep a really close Eye on them.

Another thing to consider...One well placed peck from a mature Orp could kill a Silkie.

Thanks for replying about the living situation. All the chickens only spend the nights together in the coop, and otherwise...rain, shine or snow are outdoors all the time in a very large rotating area. Good point about the orp. roo and a peck - that is what I worry about! Right now, he is terrified of the two silkie roos even though he is bigger than them. LOL. I guess that might change? Does pecking order change once they grow up...and if so, is it due to size?

I have considered putting the three silkies into their own coop (although hubby says "no" to the expense of buying another one!) but the other issue is that we have two roos and only ONE hen - that would be horrible for her! I can't seem to find anyone with silkies to sell here either. Plus winters are HORRIBLE here and we get multiple feet of snow and huge drifts that stays around all winter - they would be warmer in this very well built coop with the others. I do worry though. Guess we can wait a little longer and see?

any idea on the colors of these guys? ;-) I thought one might be partridge? is the other lavender? he has brown too though...

thanks -
Valerie

Have you considered routinely adding an avian multi vit with all the B's in it? The curled toes could be a deficiency and a severe deficiency can cause sight problems.

Vitamin A & E are the vitamins that can have an impact on eyesight . Most of the red and orange vegetables are a good source of A
But so is tuna.
