Silkie thread!

What is a good ratio to have. Or safe ratio I should say. I have 7 four month olds. Of which 3 have crowed. A fourth and firth I am betting on being boys as well. All thought you will never know, I'm really hoping I'm wrong! The two remaining I'm sure are girls. And they are as sweet and petite as they come. Then I have the Fabulous Frizzled Five! My 5.5 week olds. If I were to judge based on their demeanor, I'd say 2 boys, but me guessing is just that, a guess. I have 2 in the bunch who are always rough housing with each other. No one else wants to be involved in their antics. And when I have put them together with the teenagers, the one rough houser goes straight up to one of the 4 month old boys and throws a Ninja kick at their chest! But never to the girls.
So if my guesses are right, I have 7 boys and 5 girls. What is a safe ratio? I'm trying not to get too attached to some of the boys, but there are 2-3 that are my best budgirls. I love them dearly.

I use the ratio- 1 boy to 5 girls. So if you pair up boys you double your girls.

Just wanted to share a few pics of my newest members. I'm thinking 1 boy, 1 girl. Any thoughts?????

I'll get pics of the All Stock bag and ingredients tomorrow. I know its not to sweet because I can feed it to my goats. It foes have copper in it though. Would that cause a problem with the chickens?

Can there be such a thing as a "Frizzled Sizzle"? A Sizzle is a Frizzled Silkie...so all Sizzles are Frizzled.
Fo Rizzle my Nizzle!!

Maybe you have found what Jerry Feeds....do you get it in Harrisonville Mo??
Lol

Ok. Hopefully the 2 I think may be boys will just be boyish girls. And hopefully not too many boys from the babies. It's gonna be really hard choosing who goes. I'll get updated photos this week and we can all venture a guess.

A Good Rooster ratio is relative to each individual situation, breed and individual birds.
I had a Buff Orp Cockerel that tried to fight every other Male on the place. He nearly killed another one that he had been raised with. The two were inseparable buddies, then one day spring sprung and that ended that!!
That bird is no longer here!!
Some others won't fight for their own food...

But I'm willing to bet, 2/1 in a single pen isn't going to work out for you.

IMO, most large breed roosters will fight each other no matter how many hens unless kept separate. there are people that have been successful but I have never been

I have a pair of roosters with 9 hens in one flock. But they have lots of room.
One of my breeding pens has an Extra Roo in with a pair, he came with the pair when we got them and they get along fine.
The extra Rooster does not crow, or ever challenge the dominant one.

Good afternoon silkie lovers!! I searched the other threads but not sure if same general rules apply to silkies , since I've heard they usually lay later . So thought I would ask the experts

! My 21 week old silkie boy has been chasing the girls every morning. He hasn't been successful at catching any of them (there are 5 same age). Will they be more accepting once they are closer to laying? I've heard some silkies don't lay until 10+ months

, so could this go on for months ?
