It can be used. Add a fan. Still air is just not evenly heated.

Get a couple or pharmacy type fever thermometers ($3.99). Use a couple of bottles of water for stability without eggs.

Set it up and get it adjusted over a two day period. Make small changes and wait at least 2 hrs between adjustments.

Here's a pic of my hatchery silkie rooster, Dr. Suess. None of my hatchery silkies have impressive crests.

I ordered 6 silkies from Meyer, and half of them were males!

3 out of 6 females isn't bad. I hatched 12 eggs from my own silkies and only got 1 girl. So yeah 1 girl and 11 boys... now that's BAD lol. I just hatched out 6 more and i would be so happy if I got 3 girls out of these 6

I have a Genesis 1588 and a Octagon 20 advance ex. I usually incubate in the Octagon and hatch in the Genesis. If I have over 24 eggs to incubate I use the Genesis for incubating. I get great hatches in the Octagon 20 and after many trial and error incubations in the Genesis, I get good hatches in it now. Secret to both is to keep the humidity in the 42% range.

I just remembered something that my grandpa told me, don't worry, it's about silkies. About October, my grandpa was driving on the back roads near my house and he said that he seen 2 rooster silkies on the side of the road, just walking around. There wasn't a house for miles so they were probably dropped off by someone who didn't want them anymore. He said that he would have stopped and picked them up for me but he didn't because he didn't want to introduce any sickness into my current flock, not to mention I didn't need 2 more roosters. He said that they were ok looking buff and partridge, but he dosnt exactly know silkie colors too well, but his descriptions matched the colors, so I guess he was right. If I found those two now, I probably would take them, but they most likely got killed by a predator, froze over the winter, or somone else found them and took them in. Hopefully it's the latter.

I Am looking for silkie or frizzle chicks, breeder quality in Michigan or northern Indiana, with no luck :( does anyone know of any breeders within 3 hours or so of the Mi/In line?
