or anyone else that might have an idea. My baby girl is due to hatch her eggs this week, actually on thanksgiving. My delima and question. She is in a nice sized coop all by herself sitting on her eggs. My question is should I leave her in the coop to raise her babies or put her in a brooder box I have in the garage with a heat lamp for a while. It has been getting quite cold here overnight, sometimes in the 20's (F). It wasn't my idea to hatch eggs this late in the year but Sadie had other ideas. Or should I put a heat lamp in the coop with her, (this kinda scares me because of the fire risk) or will she be able to keep them warm enough on her own.
I'm thinking moving her to the brooder box is my best option, but should I move her now or wait for the babies to hatch?
anyone else ever had this issue? What worked for you?
I wait until they have hatched. Momma will keep them warm , but I just find it safer to keep them contained in a brooder box. If they stray too far away from momma in the main coop the danger of freezing to death is a real threat.
