What problemsare you having? Legs?

I have a post in the emergencies thread. A new baby is not walking and her knees appear locked. They have crusty dry stuff on them. I've been waiting to see if anyone has info before culling but she's crying constantly so I probably should do it today. I was thinking Merek's but I would think she would have gotten weaker by now. I was thinking maybe she got too big for her shell? She's the chubby one. At a loss.

If she is brand new, she is too young for mareks. I wonder if she has some of the egg membrane dried on her legs?

Can you give any more information or post a pic? How old is she? If just hatched, Maybe spraddle leg??? Is she the only chick or does she have buddies? Is she able to walk at all?

Does anyone here know how to construct a swamp cooler? I know the concept but not the nuts and bolts of making one.

I hate swamp coolers! haha They don't work unless the humidity is very very low and they really don't work over 90 degrees IMO. I know you can buy cheap ones second hand around here on craigslist but they are house sized, lowes also sells them. We had them cooling my house last summer and I did lots of research on them to find that if they are cooling your house about 20 degrees they are doing a great job. Not so great when every day is 100+

Basically you need a Fan to force air thru a wet pad. So hmm idk a fan seems easy but it needs some force behind it, a moisture pad they sell cheap at Lowes made for swamp coolers. Also you need a pump to keep the pad wet and a water source for the pump to draw from. Ours was hooked up to hose connection on the side of our house thru a simple little add on bracket/nut thingy which the tubing connected to. I know ours worked with a float like you see inside a toilet that turns the water on and off according to the water level so it doesn't flood everywhere. Parts are pretty darn cheap I bet you could find everything you need online if they don't sell the parts locally for you. I imagine you'd need some sort of air ducting to direct the air coming out and of course some sort of box to house everything but that could be a lot of things it just needs to have good airflow so like a vents all around. Also if you manage to piece all of it together it needs to be on top of whatever structure you're cooling from what I've seen.

Gosh did any of that help??

I've always had excellent cooling from swamp coolers--at least until we hit humid monsoon season. We took them off the house because of asthma, but have one in the garage. It will turn you into an icicle if you're not careful. If the pad is not wet, however, it will not cool. The power of the fan makes a difference, and you need adequate circulation through vents or open windows.

Here's the thread on her condition.

It is sounding like egg membrane. I'm going to try washing her knees and maybe letting her legs dangle in some water. She seems to get relief but only when mommy holds her, not when she sits in her chicken chair. Spoiled!

She cannot walk at all. When I hold her up her legs are stiff in position. I have four from this hatch.

They little birds are in the kitchen. The big birds outside have a double shade structure and I'm about ten degrees cooler than what the weather report says because I sit between small mountains. I just turned on their heat in the kitchen actually it was getting a bit cool from the air conditioning seeping in from the rest of the house. For extreme heat when I go camping I use the double shade structure technique, one shade then another two feet under it. I'm in Texas too and we go rustic survival camping in the dead of summer.

LOL me either right now!!

How are you keeping your birds cool right now?

I'm in Ky and it gets pretty hot here in the summer. I bit the bullet and invested in a small roll of the greenhouse shade material (made out of a metal mesh) that can lower your temp. 10 t0 14 degrees. I put it over the top of my pen where it is them most sunny and it really does help. I can feel the difference when I step under it from being in the sun. Last year, I used the frozen water bottles and I also keep a small fan running in the coop all the time just to move air around and keep humidity down. So far, so good, this season. Also not dealing with triple digit degrees.

That is a neat way of keeping them col. I use a gunny sack for my rabbits. I wet the sack and it makes it cool for them.

So every time you clean out the water you add more in it?

Yes exactly when I wash the waters and refill, I add ACV which is done every other day
