Left is buff but yes looks red as well I agree. I have one that is the similar darker red buff color but I still call it buff. I'm not sure the progression of buffs as they grow up color wise other than I've heard that they change a lot. The other one I think is grey? Do you see barring on the individual feathers? If not I *think* it wouldn't be a cuckoo. Very nice looking little guys though
Cocci is scary! I'm soo sorry you're going thru this. I'm about to start researching now vaccinating against cocci since my luck I'll be the one having an issue with it next. I keep things as clean as possible but I know it's unavoidable to a certain extent because I was told it can live in the soil and also be brought onto your property by wild birds
( that's true right guys?)
Anyone have any input on if there is a vaccine and if it's a good idea? The medicated feed I quit using since the protein level in the feed available to me isn't very much at all in comparison to what I would prefer. I thought about mixing it with a higher protein feed to raise the levels but then I figured that would just defeat the point of feeding the medicated by diluting it. So stalemate at the moment.
Anyhow, you and I are having the bad luck this season huh?
Next year we will reminisce about how cruddy it was last year ok? Then we will be happy for all the hard lessons learned and pass on all the info we can to help others
Hang in there, PM me if you need help with anything
Cocci has varying strains and is not always responsive to sulmet so keep corid on hand. Cocci can live in the soil as well as unsanitary conditions. So disinfectant, clean bedding and such are first line defense. Tjem ne ready to treat at first sign. Corid is safe so you can give to entire brooder or coop without separating the sick one. All new birds here get a round just as a precaution.
