Silkie thread!

Had my first white chick hatch as I was replying to the above message. I have been waiting all year for a baby from the 2 proud parents pictured below. Of all of my Silkies, these 2 are my favorite because of their sweet cuddly personalities. I should have more hatching this week. Both of the parents are from Premier.

In a couple of those pictures he looks like he could roll right over backwards.

I think he's pretty handsome anyway.

The middle picture is good. That's how they are supposed to look. Take a look at my white cockerel. This was taken when he was about 16 wks. old.

I honestly did not know this was the look to try to obtain! So I will need to not discourage him from breeding whenever he might be ready to get that body type hopefully in my flock! Thanks!!!!

It will be fun to see what I would get. So the Buff silkie should not be used for breeding? Would they continue to be crestless?

Unless its the picture angle I'm seeing severe wry tail on the lighter one. That one should not be used for breeding if that tail stands off to the side all of the time.

I think she was just moving but I will watch it..........do not yet know if it is she or he.

I have a question that may be dumb lol. I have a white silkie roo that I am gonna cull (not breed) because his comb is way too red. It rained the other day and he was very wet and I noticed that he has little horns on the top of his comb. Does this mean he is mixed with another breed or do silkie males sometimes have that on thier combs? Just wondering because I don't see horns on my other two males from a different breeder...

Newtofarming, I do not think that is the desirable look. I just emailed an awesome breeder,Amy Piehl, about how typey a rooster should be. A roosters type should be balanced. I don't think yours would even be able to breed. I may copy and paste some of what she told me. Be right back.

natural instinct. - most chickens do it, but silkies do it more. in other breeds its typical of hens not roosters. in silkies - especially younger ones they ALL do it. Hens do it instinctually from I guess thinking its a rooster ??? i dunno. I've noticed it too though and thats the best I've ever come up with

I was wondering if that coul mean they are Pullets...cause I was told they were...but I don't know..... I know that my bantam rooster(that is not silkie) does not do it..in fact he will try to get out from under my hand...and my other bantam Pullet that is only 2 months does the butt up ...head down thing....Oh well..hope they are Pullets

At some point silkies were crossed with polish to increase crest size, which is where the horns come from--the trifid comb gene. And at one point, the standard REQUIRED three combs at the top of a silkie's comb. The standard has changed, and they are now considered a fault.
