thanks! Im starting to think my lockdown humidity needs to be lower! I found my own eggs hatched great when I forgot about them....

Im tired of eggtopsies with fully formed chicks just sitting there dead! Also, huge air cells and dry chicks. Well, its so dry here that Im thinking dry incubation is more like 30-40% for me, if left alone, my humidity goes down into the 20s sometimes . So, when I get eggs with great packaging, and everything looks good at lockdown and then a low hatch rate, the prob is with lockdown, just had someone near me w/ bad hatches also get advised to lower humidity at lockdown to the 50s. I will try this w/ my own eggs to see, my hatch rate friday was 15%

I've let the humidity fall to 28% with no problem during the first 18 days. My last hatch of 14 Marans eggs, yielded 2 chicks! That's when I still set the lockdown humidity at 60-65%. The sad thing is, all the eggs were rocking on day 20, and by day 22 all were dead except for the 2 that hatched. All had drowned. I will say though, that any that have survived my mistakes are real hale and hardy birds. Live and learn, next time will be better...I hope!

Is there a web site somewhere that covers the color genetics of Silkies? Like what colors to breed to get what colors? I'd hate to drain you all here with my newbie questions!

I have a question for all you silkie experts. I was told by someone that she hatched out some very nicely shaped chicks. I asked her if she could tell, and she said yes you can tell by their shape. So, anyone have an idea as to what a nicely shaped silkie chick looks like???? This is for show quality birds I take it. Thanks Any ideas would be appreciated.
