Silkie thread!

They were separate from my flock for the duration of their brooding. Both were housed under the house in side by side medium dog crates, under artificial light. I moved them there on their third day of brooding. They had no visual or physical contact with any other birds, though they could hear my Ko Shamos in the same room as them.

I already confiscated the eggs and chicks from them. One Eye almost killed one of the hatchlings, she was also sitting on it with her leg and it was almost completely out of the shell but totally encased in its membrane still. I ended up with 5 chicks from 10 eggs, 3 Booted Bantam and 2 Silkie. Not awful but yikes... not gonna let those momma's brood again. Not sure what went wrong but I'm not really inclined to attempt it twice so I can find out. Mommas are now back in the bantam pen and chicks are all doing well in the brooder. Got some very weird chicks from those eggs, not sure how Black Copper split for Mottled X what I think is a Paint = Lavender but OK.

Well, I guess it's like Forrest Gump said, "you never know what you're gonna get." Guess it's that way with chickens, brooding, hatching, and chicks. You'll get better at determining what is gonna work best in the future. It amazes me every time I learn yet another new thing about chickens or my particular group of hens.

Babies turned 6 weeks on Sunday! Still a gender guessing game, as I'm sure it will be for awhile... But look how fluffy and cute they are! I can't believe how big they've gotten... Proud Mama right here!

I love watching them run around and hearing their little feet stomp on the ground. Yesterday they got rice for the first time and were SO excited, especially when one would get a big sticky chunk! :D

Hi guys here's another pic of my newest editions. These littles are the same age, could someone tell me why wing feathers and tail feathers differ so much. Is it possible I have a pair? One female and one male

Or could it be one is just a better quality silkie

adorable they look just like my guys

I also try to re-home silkies I will NOT butcher them. They're too precious.

Sadly, people who take in unwanted roosters may tell you they will have a home but in reality they are looking for a free meal. It is no guarantee they will live but when I take mine to the auction they are no doubt going to die the same day. It is just the reality of being male so that is how it goes.

can someone sex my silkie for sure? 1 year old. In a seat because she can't walk due to wry neck. the long neck feathers makes me think a male but the tail isn't real full like my other rooster. But I had cut it to help keep her clean when she couldn't stand alone. Also she has never laid an egg or crowed since she has been in the house. Nov 2 2015
That is a very cute sling seat. I have needed something like that when I treated a pullet who slipped her tendon on the back of her knee. I was not able to fix it because the leg just kept twisting from her standing on it. I tried making a sling seat from a towel but she just flipped herself off of it. Sadly I had to put her down when I realized she was getting worse instead of better.

I had an appointment today and when we got home we discovered that two of our dogs got into the hatchery room and destroyed eggs waiting to go in the incubator and they killed one of my splash Silkies hatched on Easter. The other two splash chicks we kept when we sold the rest are missing so my hope is they are alive and hiding somewhere in the house. I have not heard any peeping yet, though, so they may have been injured and hidden somewhere to die. I have to have my daughter look for them when she gets home from rehearsal and it is her "sweet sixteen" birthday today. Of all days to lose our chicks it did not need to be on her birthday.

I know the two dogs were just being dogs but we actually have another dog that is an Anatolian Shepherd and she was not able to stop the attack. I am hoping she tried to protect the chicks from the other two dogs but chances are she ran and hid while they destroyed everything.

I have a little silkie chick that I got from a local breeder. It's a yellow/buff color with a black spot on its head. It's wings look like they are turning black and white. I would like to know if it's a splash or a paint? How do i tell the difference? Thanks. :)
