Silkie thread!

Sorry Tasaf: I'm in Tennessee not Texas. I'm sure there are silkie breeders in Texas but I don't know any personally. I'm sure others can chime in with some advice. Sometimes, depending on where you live, it is hard to find nice stuff locally. I started by getting in shipped eggs, some from here on BYC, some on Ebay and other places. I just happen to love hatching. There are also several good breeders who ship, sometimes all the way across the country. Bobbi Porti of Indigo Egg (look for her on Facebook)in Florida has some gorgeous silkies in all colors and she ships eggs and chickens all over the county and even to Europe. I have been impressed with her experience with shipping.but you need to get with her before it get too hot. Good luck!.

I just got these two girls, and I know theyre mixes buuut... What would they classify as? They seem to have partridge in them. Thanks ahead of time!

We just were given two adult silkie hens from a friend, and we've never had the breed before. We're kind of stumped about their behavior (we've had many bantam breeds and are pretty experienced with poultry in general). One of them has adapted very well - is active and eating/drinking, and protects her silkie sister. The sister...well, I'm not quite sure how she's doing. It's been a week now, and we've never seen her eat/drink, and she rarely moves from her little corner in the coop. We handle her daily and put her in front of food/water, and she's sweet as can be. She will coo at us as we cuddle her, and flick her little head around. But she doesn't walk around when we put her down (even when we nudge her) and I'm worried that she's not able to fend for herself.

She has a very large beard/muffs and impressive crest. I also worry that she just can't see at all. Do you occasionally need to trim up the fluff near their faces? Any advice at all for a new mom of two adorable silkies?

It might be worth buying a tub of horse braiding elastics and popping her crest up in a ' ponytail ' . Birds that can't see are definately disadvantaged and the stress of relocation could put her off her food. If you find that putting her crest up helps , then yes I would give her face a trim around the eyes and beard.
Cooked rice with raw egg stirred through is always a nice treat. :)
