Silkie thread!

These are my pullets and cockerels: Thunder, a splash pullet Disco, a black pullet Charlie, a partridge pullet Carl, a porclien cockerel Hamlet, a black cockerel And I don't know if this is violating the rules, but I thought my paint pullet Sweetheart was a silkie but she's a sultan. They are all 17 weeks old or 4 months

Very pretty! But I don't think Sweetheart is a Sultan, she's a Sizzle (so are Charlie, Carl and Hamlet). Sweetheart also looks splash, not paint. And Disco very much looks like a frizzled Silkie

I still haven't been able to determine if it's sun, dirt, or actual rust feathers growing in.  She had recently gone through growing new porcupine feathers on her crest so if she was indeed molting, I can't figure why the rust feathers remained -- unless Silkies don't molt all their body feathers at once?  I mean, with our Leghorns and Ameraucanas you could tell they were molting because it looked like pillows exploded in the yard and there was some bare skin showing but with Silkies I've never seen that happen and I've had the Silkies for 5 yrs.

There is a ' soft ' and ' hard ' moult . Sun bleaching does occur in darker birds but is usually more notable on white birds when they ' yellow '.

Regardless I think all my Silkie chicks are the absolute cutest

I don't want to be obnoxious, but any opinions on color? I also *think* I'm getting a Roo vibe from it

I would think it's blue but when you click on the pics it's wing feathers are black but I think it's a black silkie I am not sure of sex though.

Can anyone help me age my silkies and maybe tell what sex they are? We got them from TSC. They told us when we got them they were a week old but they looked way older. That was almost 2 months ago

I have four pullets: 3 paint Silkies and a black split to paint. What would be the best color rooster to breed to these girls to get nice loud (bold) paints? Black or a Paint?

It is buff leakage, not desirable if you are breeding but fine if you are not.

Wouldn't the leakage show in the pullet feathers? I didn't notice the rust feathering until she was almost 4 yrs old. She had the rust feathering coming in end of last summer and still has them now so I'm guessing it's sun damage. And, no, I've never used her for breeding - she's too tiny for one thing, and too OCD scratching wooden nestboxes until she splinters her toes or loses toenails bleeding! We have to use plastic nestboxes now. She's lost 2 toe ends and a toenail permanently. She gets serious CRD issues which the vet has to treat her yearly and she's had nasal surgery -- just not a prime candidate for breeding but we love the little clown!

She absolutely must go broody when the other Silkie goes broody!


Her silly "hair" full of cobwebs and debris!



We had so much fun watching her as a juvenile toodling around the yard wearing her chicken diaper! She escaped from the house and was having a grand ole' time exploring!


She's so little we had to build steps for her to reach the nipple waterers.


She might be little but she won't miss her treats with the others!


I have cycled through 14 chickens in 5 yrs and these two Silkies are my oldest hens now. Chickens have come and gone but these girls are still around!
