Thank you so much! I just called and he answered the phone but the wife is the one that takes care of the silkies and she isn't available to talk to until later today. I wish I could tell if mine was a roo or henHello NancyH, Not sure where you are in Michigan, but I might be able to help...
I am in Ann Arbor and have a similar backyard flock (3 standard pullets almost laying, and 2 silkies around 12weeks-old). I'm new to chickens and originally was looking for 1 Silkie, but the farmer I purchased them from insisted I needed to get a pair. They integrated really well and even fly up to the roosting bar at night. Not sure if you are near Brighton, Michigan, but the place is called Destiny Farm. Found phone number on website, but after a few days of no answer I decided to just drive there. He had a fair number of chicks for sale. If you are closer to Grand Rapids there is a woman Silkie breeder in Rockford, Mi. I haven't been there, but she was my plan B. I might be in a similar situation to you before long because 1 of my silkies is a roo and he's moving to a new home soon. I think my other Silkie is a pullet, but time will tell. Glad this silkie is very attached to my barred rock, though not sure if that will last once they fully mature.
Let us know what happens with your Silkie.
Good luck!!
Oh no sorry to hear thatAnd I just found out that at least one of my 2 silkies is a rooster, caught him crowing this morning. And that was the one I was hoping was a pullet because it had smaller wattles. Now to rehome, might be able to have the person we bought them from take them back.![]()
Thank you! I'll go check it out. I just spoke with someone just under an hour away, praying that they have a friend for my little one but I have to wait a bit and talk to the wife.If you haven't done so already, I would go to the search bar and type in 'Michigan' and post/subscribe to some of those threads to see if you find anyone local that can help with the silike buddy hunt. Good luck!
Oh no sorry to hear thatWhat age do they start crowing? Mine is 17 weeks old and still clucks

They are adorable!!! The most recent picture I have is at 14 weeks old and he is 17 weeks now. I will post it and then when I get a chance, I'll take some new onesI originally had 9, and 8 ended up being cockerels, you can check them out below.
You can see my only pullet, Tiny, is the only one that looks distinctly different from the rest (rounded crest & tail, posture, little-no wattles/comb, etc). She is now 22 weeks old and just started laying yesterday.
Two of the alpha cockerels started crowing around 12 weeks (approximately when this picture was taken).
