Silkie thread!

I felt bad about locking mine in the coop all day so I let them out (it's rained all day)
They were mud balls.... They just got bathed & blow dried....
I will never ever let them out again in the rain, lesson learned

I've had feather-footed Silkies for years - including feather-footed Breda too - and I don't let them romp in heavy rain. On sprinkly days when it stops raining and there's no mud or slushy soil but hard wet soil, then I might let them out. It all depends on the soil, rain, or wind conditions. I have one Silkie that is smart about staying under cover but the other Silkie and the Breda don't have the good sense to stay out of the mud. Caked mud on feather-feet is not good.

What is the best substrate for for breeding pens? I am redoing mine and I have always just had a dirt floor but am looking for something cleaner and easier to maintain.

Also so excited for my F4 cuckoo sizzles to be hatching out in less than a week!!!

After having to bathe mine last night, I'm thinking about doing part of their pen in a cobble stone pattern. That way they have an option to be outside & out of the mud plus grass & weeds can grow up between the stone for them to peck at, spray off to clean...

These are my new bearded Silkie roosters Named Romeo and Shakespeare. I was wondering what color they are

(Above Photo) Romeo. His top coat is black but under coat is grey, with light gold on his neck and
head

.
(Above Photo) Shakespeare. He has a silver under coat with a black feather over coat. The brown you see is just dirt. He needs a bath as dose his brother but its far to cold now to bath them

I am wanting to use pea gravel but am afraid it will eventually work its way through the dirt

Awww - Cuckoo and Blue birds are my new love since I found what good colors their feathers are hiding dust from dirt baths! White and Buff I have to keep shampooing but Cuckoo, Blue, AND Partridge are great colors for the open backyard! Show us any babies that hatch!

I hope this link works

I plan on using a concrete mold (like 1 shown in the link) I seen on Google when looking for ideals where ppl did top the man-made stones with pea gravel, sand or those glass pebbles (very pretty)

Your concrete mold idea is very pretty. I'm too old and lazy to do something that energetic. We just hired a contractor to lay a cement patio with a roof over it. We hose down the concrete under the coop and pen about once a week - no bedding because the birds free-range and hardly use the pen except to lay eggs or roost.

My silkies need a bath....they want back outside where they have room to roam the weather has been awful (cold raining) the past several days,
400
so my chics are inside in a broader to small for them.
