took the 6 weeks old silkies and serama chicks outside for the first time today. 50 degrees. Little chilly. It only out for 15 min. Very funny watching them explore.

this is one of our 2 surviving blue/black silkies and around about 5 months old as of now. Such beautiful silkies.

I have two white silkies. They turn 1 in march though neither one has all the feather yet. Hoe much longed till they get all theor feathers on the legs and stuff right now they have very poofy heads and very soft body feather

Feather-legged breeds hatch with downy feathers already on legs/toes. You might consider the possibility your Silkies were the result of a cross-breeding w/ a non-Silkie parent or that your Silkies just don't have the feather-legged trait. Post photos and we can help you identify. Another possibility is that feather-footed birds break off quills while foraging or dust-bathing or scratching in the yard. A picture would be most helpful to see. Even if your Silkies are a cross-breeding they will still be very sweet birds.

What a lovely bunch!

So, one of my chicks crowed this morning or attempted to when I turned the lights on in the bedroom. It was pathetic sounding but looking at his crest and the one I know is a girl I can see I have 4 roo's and 1 hen. I have a question now. Would it be okay to keep 4 silkie roo's if you will have a total of 9 hens? Getting 8 laying hens in April and really hoping 3 hens per roo will be good enough. I really don't want to rehome my roo's because unfortunately my two favorite chicks are roosters. Yuki and Sora and Aiko who is the one who crowed I got as a packing peanut and made a point to take good care of him and look after him and treat him like all the others.

Bantam chicks should be separated from large fowl chicks in most cases to prevent injuries and malnutrition. Is there an injury or malformation of the leg or does it seem to be lethargic?

I was literally just typing up a response to you and he died so sad this is the hardest part about getting chicks. He hadn't been doing so well today. I think he had something bigger wrong than a hurt leg. I had some younger chicks in another brooder so I put them in with my grey so he isn't lonely.

Sorry for your loss.

One of my most recent hatches is a sizzle!! Looks like he got some!!

Not too sure what color this one is going to be but so far it has frizzled silkie feathering while the father was frizzled straight (but silkie type). Trying to attach pic from my phone.
