Yes, I think this is what's going on! At least one chicken, Disco, is molting (she lost her WHOLE TAIL!!!!). I'm not too sure about the other, but they haven't laid for a month now, they are probably molting as well. And your silkies are so cute!Ours brood empty nests all the time. Currently, have a Breda hen gone broody over an empty nest. It's good to give their bodies a rest after laying so many eggs in a row! During molt a chicken might get reclusive and be mistaken as a broody but is only hiding. If a broody is in hiding after 3 weeks I consider they are being reclusive during molt. Keep them fed, watered, and out of the box for exercise and they'll eventually snap out of it. I supplement my broody, molting, or ill chickens ONE drop of liquid no-iron children's Poly-Vi-Sol vitamin 2 or 3x a week because they don't eat so well during those times.
Broody Cuckoo Breda
Broody Partridge Silkie
Black Silkie and Partridge Silkie sharing a broody nest.

I'd guess male from the looks. Still a bit young to be fully certain.
