Silkie thread!

I'm curious what you'd call her as well. That creamier white color probably means she is gold based rather than silver based (silver makes the white brighter/crisper). I've heard recessive white doesn't tend to allow other colors to come through, I don't have enough experience with it to say if it would occasionally allow a feather or two to come through with color. Dominant white is leaky and if she had one copy of it like paint silkies do whatever color she had underneath could leak through in spots. Hopefully someone with more experience can give you a better answer though, I'm still pretty new to breeding and understanding genetics.

Thank you for your reply. This is all so interesting but it takes me a bit of studying to grasp it. Hopefully someone will chime in soon. Thanks again

Does anyone know what color these chicks are going to be? I'm not sure what it's called. And will the barred looking one just stay like this? They were 3 weeks to Thursday. Full silkies.

The top one isn’t a full Silkie it looks to be a NN Silkie with smooth feathering. As for the colour on that one I can’t say for sure yet. I could only guess as it’s some type of partridge but I’ve never had smooth feathered partridge colours before.

As for the bottom one, it does appear to be full Silkie and it looks to be a nice little gold :)

What makes you say that? I'm just very confused how they couldn't be 100% silkies. I bought eggs from a lady who only had silkie chickens and showed them to me is why I'm confused. I see that the wings are different than everyone else's, but the rest of his fluff and toes is the same. I've never done silkie chicks, previously I bought them as adults is why I'm confused. Thanks for helping.

I’m happy to help :) I say it’s not full Silkie due to the fact that it’s a NN (naked neck) Silkie. Having the NN means that it’s past generations have been cross bred to Naked Necks to produce a bird that has the naked neck. Hence why naked neck Silkies are not full Silkie.

It may be too soon to judge the feathers since it’s not fully feathered. However, it’s common for NN Silkies to have smooth feathers in the first generation. They can have Silkie feathers but even then it’s not full Silkie. They also tend to still have the 5 toes and everything the same as a full Silkie except they have a naked neck and sometimes smooth feathering with a single comb.

There are silkie breeders that are working on project called satin. This is usually a silkie crosses with a Cochin and selective breed back to silkie over many generations to create a hard feather bird with silkie chicken type and qualities like black skin, crest and beard, 5 toes. You can search for satin was also known as smooth sizzle at one time to find more information. It can not be a silkie with out the silkies fur like feathers.
Your necked neck is probably from a satin project. She may have shown you all silkies but she either had a fence jumper or she didn’t mention she also has NN and smooth feathered birds in her flock of breeders. As far as color I believe they are both a partridge like.

I’m still sticking with that the one you have on the bottom picture (blondie) is definitely a gold not a partridge. It’s classed as an impure gold due to it having darker wings and tail feathers.

It is achieved by breeding a gold to a partridge usually. However, it is still a gold Silkie just with extra dark on the wings.

Here’s one of my golds that looks exactly the same as yours and then another photo of them when they are older.
