This is my five month old Silkie. This chicken is quite timid and seems pretty hen like. The comb seems pretty small. What do you people think the gender is. I’m leaning towards female, but want some more opinions.

Also, does anyone know of a way to keep free range chickens away from a certain area in the yard?

Hmmm from what I can see looks more like a girl but with a large comb for a female.

There aren't any streamers coming out of the back of the crest?

I have 6 pure breds. A white, one black, one NN black frizzle, one blue frizzle (she's a mutt but pure). I also crossed the frizzle with a regular sized NN and got pure NN frizzles. The are bantam sized. Would they be silkie or a frizzle NN? If they are silkie they are mutts. The hens are black and the Roos are blue and gold. RIP Fancy Pants.

For those of you familiar with paint silkies. I got a little paint silkie about three weeks ago now. When I got it it had 2 or three small very light dark spots on it. Now it’s starting to feather out and no spots at all it looks all white. So just wondering at what age they usually get their colouring?

Paints usually start with spots and once they start feathering in where the spots are will feather in black. They'll often get smaller spots showing up as they feather in more and more. I think by 6 months or so you'll probably have a decent idea of how the spots are going to look.

I've heard of chicks with no visible spots getting some spots later on as well. So far I haven't really experienced this personally other than maybe a black feather showing up occasionally on what appears to be a white from paint bird (which really isn't even noticeable in my birds unless you go looking for it).

What you're experiencing isn't really very typical from what I've seen of paints but I have had it happen. I had a chick recently that had one light spot (looked more like blue than black) low on its back. Despite the spot being there it feathered in all white. It's around 3-4 months now and all white. The mother who I originally thought was white from paint when examined closely had around 1 black feather on her neck. I'm now thinking she is a very poorly marked paint rather than white. I confirmed the mother can't be a white from paint (with 2 copies of dominant white) since when paired with a black rooster all three of the offspring were black. I wonder if your little one might be similar, perhaps her/his copy of dominant white just didn't allow much black to get through and is just a very poorly marked paint?

It'll be interesting to see if your baby turns out all white or develops spots later on.

Hmmm I think I'm having trouble understanding exactly what you crossed with what.

Pictures would be great if you are able to get some of the parents.

It sounds like you crossed a naked neck (turken) with either silkies or satins? It can get confusing with all the feather types and not everyone agrees on the definitions which further confuses things.

If you crossed a NN (turken) with a silkie or a satin the offspring are mixes of the two and couldn't really be considered as either of the parents breeds.
