I don't know about that. My daughter just won BV with a silkie that isn't too light and doesn't have any smut at all. Also there were two very nice buffs in the open show that were even darker than my daughter's and neither had any smut. Not sure about the red comb thing though.

ETA. I see you breed buff silkies. I wonder if the smut in all of yours has to do with showgirls? I don't breed those so I wouldn't know that. Also, Sundown has many gorgeous smut-less buff silkies.

Also, I am not a buff breeder so I am going by the birds that I have purchased and have seen at the poultry shows.

Chickendales was just saying that buff is a balancing act. Usually the darker combed ones tend to have smutty tails and the ones with the light combs have lighter plumage and skin. The goal is to get a rich colored buff with no smut which some have.

there are very clear buffs but lil smuttnever hurts in ur breeding program

Yes, I know that people use buffs with smut to darken the buffs, but I was just saying to say "all buffs have smut" isn't necessarily correct. I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, but just that smutless buffs do exist. I've sold my buff boys recently (because I'm not breeding them) and have had people that wanted the smuttier boys for their breeding program. The buffs are definitely tough, which is why I'm holding off breeding them until I'm done with college. Just went back to school and it is taking up a lot of my time right now.
