Silkie thread!

I attended the Washington Feather Fanciers show a month ago and bought Johnny's pullets and Silkie hatching eggs at that time. I did go from one chicken to ten birds counting the five little new Silkie babies. Most of the eggs were infertile or some other problem. The five babies are healthy and at 30 hours old doing awesome. There are five Bantam RIR eggs in lock down right now. My old incubator is fussy and I never count my chicks before they are hatched. Hah! :D  So ten birds with a possible five more. Compared to one bird that is "many" I guess. My barn and coop can handle 200. Though I don't plan on having that many again any time soon.
Bantam RIRs! Those are fancy :D I love bantam birds. Much more bang for your buck if you ask me. In terms of eggs.. Definitely not meatwise. How much does a bantam RIR weigh? I can't imagine eating one of my bantam Ameraucanas. They are super tiny.

Aren't these little guys so silly!! My silkies stand out in the rain all the time! I think if they looked up they would drown. Cant wait to see what they do in the snow.

These silkies are so pretty... I'm just curious if my Silkie is SQ. I don't think so by looking at these pics, but is she at least 4-H quality? She does look a bit like a boy and has kinda boy-ish features, but I know she is a girl. (She lays eggs) Please give your honest opinion.

Headshot

Body (Sorry i couldn't get her walking/in a natural pose, she is horrible with pictures!)

Her feet (I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure they lack feathering)

Here she is in a group shot, it's one if the best "natural" pics I have of her.

Just for fun, here is her egg!

She has all black skin (she had pink toes as a chick, but they turned black), shiny blue earlobes, she is bearded (poorly in my opinion) and has very small wattles, and all five toes. I'm still not exactly sure if she is a dark blue, or light black though.... I would get a recent pic of her, but there was some flock competition going on and part of her crest is picked, and it looks lopsided and silly. So, what are your thoughts and/or opinions?
Your girl appears to have really nice wings, but I'm afraid she wouldn't do well in a show. She is lacking in many areas. Even 4H is highly competitive, at least where I live. If you are serious about showing you should invest in some better quality. I started with eggs because I could afford the cash lay out for show quality birds, but I ended up spending $100's on eggs to get what I wanted. Not sorry I went that route as I learn so much by raising the babies and learning to evaluate them. In the mean time enjoy your sweet girl. My pet quality silkies were a big blessing to me. :)

I've just started with my silkies and i love them!!
Lovely flock!
So I have raised 2 batches of LF chicks now and this is my first Silkie group. Do the Silkies sleep more than the LF chicks? They are not lethargic, just sleep more than my other chicks did.

It can happen, especially if the hen wants nothing to do with that rooster. However, in my experience, it is more likely to be the hen attacking the roo.

Crazy silkies.. Took a good inch of snow before they finally decided it wasn't so much fun to stand out in the terrible weather.
This is a great photo!

Oh my goodness! This has got to be one of my ALL time favorite Silkie images! I am still giggling. Reminds me of those Japanese Snow monkeys that sit in hot water with snow on their heads! Hah!

I'm ok with that. She's a great pet! I will be getting a few SQ birds in the summer, so I will have something to show. She would be good for things like showmanship and community events though. And, she lays well IMO

I got some of my really good birds from a hen that looks just like yours.
