Good Morning All,
I have a little silkie (12 weeks old tomorrow) who is displaying wry tail....I'm especially bummed because it looks like a pullet. And, I NEED girls for my BBS pen! Out of 6 chicks, she is the only one that has her tail growing crooked. I'm giving all the little ones vitamins in their water but wondered if there's ANYTHING else that might help? I didn't notice the wry tail until last week after my Welsummer forced her way into the baby pen and terrorized the chicks.

Also, do you think I should contact the breeder that I got the eggs from? If it is genetic and not caused by an injury than the breeder has a carrier in her Blue/Black pen. I almost hate to ask the breeder about it because any time I've brought up a question or concern (with other breeders) they become offended and I no longer have a working relationship with them. What would you guys do?

I would think sometimes wry tail just happens. A bird that has wry tail is more likely to give off wry tailed offspring than those who don't display wry tail, but if none of the parents display wry tail - it would be difficult to figure out who the carrier is.

Here's the part you don't want to hear - do not breed this pullet. It is not a trait you want to pass on.

I don't think it's the breeder's fault, as you incubated and hatched. Could wry tail be caused during incubation? I am not sure on that. Hopefully someone with more experience with wry tail will chime in. I've only had one pullet (a barred rock) that had wry tail. She went to live with my special care chickens at a friend's house. She gets my rejects lol. Ones that should not be bred, but are not in pain - and deserve a chance at living.

This last hatch was 4 more roosters, 1 white pullet (I think) and 1 blue pullet (Smokey). I might as well sell all of them because my goal is to have a Blue/Black/Splash pen. I'm literally down to Mysty Blue (blue hen) and Leo Pierre (a splash rooster). I've got 4 of Mysty Blues eggs developing in the incubator, though.

Did the white pullet come from the b/b/s eggs you got? I think if it did you can use it in your b/b/s pen because white is recessive.

I really don't think there is anything you can do but if it's only slightly off it may go away in a couple of weeks. I have had that happen.

The eggs were from different breeding pens. The white chicks are pure whites-Their daddy is a white Bobby Porto rooster and they are beautiful.

So, could I at least use the white pullet in a BBS pen (even though the offspring will cover her white)??? She won't be laying for a while anyway and it would be nice if I could keep her. That would also give my rooster a little variety

and I could move "Cream Puff" to a white pen in the future. A white rooster would be easier to come by than a white hen for me.

I really don't think there is anything you can do but if it's only slightly off it may go away in a couple of weeks. I have had that happen.

I've been hoping it would just go away. Yesterday I thought it looked better but then after watching and staring at her for awhile realized that it was the same. She is such a cutie with a bonnet crest and good type like my partridge girl. I wish I could post pictures, but my computer won't let me today.
