Silkie thread!

I got framework of a carport from my parents a year ago. I got it put up today and found a 20x10 tarp in a cabinet that I did not know I had. So now I have a covered area for the Silkies when they go outside in a month or so. Just need to wire it up so it is predator proof and then build the pallet coop to go under it.

I also took the chicks out today in the tractor, they did not like it. New environment and a little cold. My orphan chick was fine, scratching around like normal. But the Silkies wanted none of it. My DW said they are diva's.
Sounds really nice. Are you going to post pics in the coop sections ? Would love to see your pallet coop

Getting my first silkies tomorrow. Getting 11 4 month old breeder quality that are from East Coast Silkies. Current owner had a short time and decided to move to back to Canada. I am so excited I don't think I will be able to sleep. These will be my first chickens. I have an order of a few different breeds from Meyer Hatchery coming in Feb. I am glad you are all here in case I need help.
Wow ! Eleven ! They are going to be soooo cute

I wouldnt be able to sleep either

Congrats! What color will they be?
The 2 roos are blue and white. The rest are believed to be hens. They are buff, black, blue, white, paint, and splash. I hope to dabble in breeding them. If I understand all the posts I have read, I should be able to get many colors from just the 2 roos. In Feb. I have a mix of 15 day olds coming that will be BLR Wyandottes, SL Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, Blue Cochins, and an Australorp.

That carport frame and tarp are big scores!

I cover my silkie pen with Walmart tarps and it looks like a homeless colony.

But, they need protection from the sun and rain -because they just stand there and get drenched! I build my own pen enclosure also so it's nothing fancy. I use 2X8's for the base and 1X3's for the posts. Then I staple chicken wire (or even green garden fencing) to the wood. It wouldn't keep wild predators out but it keeps the LF chickens from getting into the "Silkie Area" and eating their food. It also keeps our Shih-Tzu out of their area. We have 2 seperate coops (one for LF and one for silkies) and the back yard is completely fenced so the chickens are pretty safe. The "normal chickens" free range so we do have to look out for overhead predators. Thats another good thing about having the carport/tarp over your silkies....it'll prevent hawks from attacking them.

Is it bad that it's 20 outside and i want to fire up the incubator??? I just need to figure out where to put the babies after they hatch....

It gets colder than that here and I hatch all winter. I just don't put them out quite so soon.

Just to entice you, here are my babies born in the past 2 days (there is one older one that is about 10 days old)

Ooooooh they are the sweetest chicks!

I love partridge babies with their little chipmunk stripes. They are beautiful, mama2my4!
Hey, you aren't supposed to be enticing ME, but it worked-LOL!

As a matter of fact.....does anyone have partridge silkie hatching eggs to sell? Shhh, don't tell my DH! I've got eggs in the incubator now and convinced him to let me hatch them as a test hatch. But, your babies are so cute!
