Silkie thread!

Peppermint, who I hope is a she.

Lucia, a splash who I hope is a female! is her quality decent? she is a little younger than the others. she was hatched first of sept.

Boy George. A rooster. I hope he's a goodie too.

Peppermint (left) and Pompette (right) enjoying some grass :)

Snowcone, who is a rooster. Supposed to be a splash, but I see no splashing LOL, well very little anyways.

Very cute =) Peppermint looks more like a "he" to me though looking at the head. Also, Boy George looks to have a twisted beak. Lucia is a very pretty splash =)

How old is Peppermint? I'm assuming she's at least 4 months, if Lucia was hatched 1st of September and she's the youngest? I'm not an expert but Peppermint looks like a girl to me.

And I'm pretty sure Snowcone is a splash. There's some splashing there.

peppermint is the same age as snowcone. they were about 8 weeks first of sept.

Here is another one of peppermint. he/she's been a mystery from day 1, and isn't filling out with fluff as good as the rest.
boy george doesn't have a twisted beak, unless I have no idea what I'm looking for :) maybe I need to look again.
Here is boy george and snowcone together hehehe. the boys get along and I love it!

Ok, so any idea what this light color in the hackles is on boy george? does that make him not a good quality? should I get rid of him?

Those of you who show your birds;
What do you think about using ShowSheen on the birds feathers to make them look shinier? I was reading how to prepare your bird for shows on a Cochin breeders website and she recommends using ShowSheen or Pink Spray to make your bird look shiny. Is this something you would want to do with a Silkie, make them look shiny? Or is this something you would do with a bird with 'regular' feathering?

Any tips on how to prepare your Silkie for a show? I'll be taking couple of my fluff balls to their (and my) firs show this spring! I want to make sure we'll be well prepared.

, could you get a face shot of boy george? Also, he has silver leakage in his hackles. I have heard it is okay for breeding for hen's, but if your blue hen also has hidden silver leakage the males from the breeding would end up with silver leakage which is a defect. So careful who you would breed him to. BUT, if he has a twisted beak like it looks (take a straight on face shot if possible) I wouldn't breed him.

I show, I wouldn't use show sheen on silkies, they are not supposed to be as shiny as regular feathered birds. I DO use a shine for my polish roo though. What show are you going to?
I LOVE grooming my birds

The silkies are great about it and really enjoy it. What I do is file down their nails and beak first (watch for the quicks, and only file off the tips of the beak where the color is different that the rest of the beak). Then I bathe them in the sink, a lot of people like to just use dawn dish soap and an ACV/downy fabric softener rinse. But I like to use baby/dog shampoos! Baby shampoo first. then Whitener for white and light colored birds birds, darkener for dark/black birds, or just a good smelling or volumizing shampoo. Make sure you rinse ALL of the shampoo out. Careful not to get water up their noses, you can usually hold their wattles and they will automatically pull their head back so you can rinse it. After, I blowdry the silkies most of teh way, then put them in a dog crate with deep bedding and a heat lamp on top to keep them warm. Once dry I put vaseline or VetRx on their legs and combs. You can use a wire slicker brush(for dogs) to fluff them up. There is a silkie breeding, genetics, and showing thread as well, and I started a showing silkies thread.

I would not put your hatching eggs in the fridge... just somewhere cool @ 50degrees & not in sun. A steady low temperature is what you want & don't keep your eggs longer than 7 days ... after 10 days it will start to affect your Hatch rate.
