Silkie thread!

Got to love all these creative names.

A hawk killed two of my silkies. I caught him with one of my hens the day before yesterday. But thought the rutkess i made would keep him away and yesterday he got my rooster. I could kick myself have been free ranging since summer in the day and lock everyone away in the evenings without incident but now gonna have to build a chicken run and in the meantime keep them on lock down. Plus gonna have to clean up the mess the hawk made. She was the best layer, and he was my only silkie rooster.

I just love watching my girls lay their eggs, especially my Tina. She purrs and does the broody food call while she's laying

When she's finished, she'll pick up a bunch of shavings (one at a time) and put them on her back and cluck, cluck, cluck her little heart out. Cutest. Darn. Thing. EVER!
One of my hens does that same thing. :)

So awful! I'm so sorry. Some aggressive hawks will grab a bird right in front of you.

My cute little grey hen!

Catdance eggs are in the mail! Still not sure if I'm going to sell this girl after the hatch...she's my favorite

She's my first tame chicken. My fiance's egg layers are very skittish.

Thanks guys, your kind words meant a lot. I am now getting pretty educated on hawks. I only keep about 10 to 12 chickens at a time so it was quite a loss but as my friend said you provided a hungry hawk a nice chicken dinner(she was trying to make me laugh). I noticed there were 3 silkie eggs this morning so I am going to wait and see if anything hatches out. Plus in my old english game pen there were 7 eggs so I am going to hatch them out also and give a few to my friend who would like some oegb's . Kind of takes the sting out of it. In the meantime everyone is locked away until I get this problem solved I have two free range pens I am going to use that I bought this summer tarp one side off and put some clean 5 gallon paint containers so if I am not home they can get out of the rain. After all it is oregon!!!!!

The four Silkie chicks hit the five week mark today. I tried taking their portraits but they didn't want to cooperate. They wanted to sit and sleep under the spot light.

I still think they are one female and three males. When you study their faces you can see what I see maybe?

Miss Peggy is the smallest chick and the most shy. Food coloring on the feet helps me identify the chicks through the window of the chick house easily. I have poor eyesight and need all the help I can get.

Mr. Wiggin is the alpha chick and was the only boy that would stand for his portrait.

Mr. Big Foot is the smallest of the boys but he doesn't try to challenge any of the chicks.

His face had caked on FF I had to rub off.

Mr. FuzzyCheepster spends most of his time challenging Mr. Wiggin. They go at it in mock battle quite a bit.

This guy is very active. I like him best of the three I think are male.

It's hard to tell this oyung, but if I were to give my best but grain of salt educated guess I would say:

Mrs peggy- male
mr. wiggin- male
Big foot- female
mr. fuzzy cheepster- female

I kind of hope Big Foot is female. But I doubt it. My favorite game is 'guess the sex of the Silkie'. Time is on my side.

haha yeah, i'm still not 100% on my hen. she's a year old and still has never layed an egg. Never crowed though either. But my rooster doesn't like her. He ignores her, doesn't try to mate, walks all over her, and they used to get into little scuffles. But he adores my blue pullet.
