Peeps, they are so sweet! Um, you did notice the chipmunk stripes on the back, right? That's just like 3 of my new chicks..........does that mean some of yours have a partridge gene too? Mine will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and I'm trying to take lots of pictures to see how they change and turn out.

Oh Wow! I will never complain about "cold" again. It occasionally gets down to 30* F here at night and I worry!!!

Obviously, the silkies are much hardier than I give them credit for. My silkie coop has a nice, thick layer of pine shavings on the floor, good siding and vinyl over the windows and doors (or a clear shower curtain) to block the wind. When I reach inside it's probably 60* where the silkies are cuddled together. But if I lived where it regularly dropped into the negatives I would probably run extension cords out to the coops and put a heat lamp inside.
I hope your silkies keep each other warm and toasty, Chicksnherps.

It's a wind chill of -30f right now and it's very windy. It is actually not a good idea to use additional sources of heat in the winter because if you ever lose power their bodies are not adjusted to the cold and they can freeze to death. I have been giving them a small heated disk just this week since it is extremely cold but only at night to keep their body temps up. They made it over night quite well.
What a great photo!

Are you sure the saddle helps. I know that chickens keep warm by fluffing their feathers. Just a thought...

Do you have to worry about frostbite on the combs?
Thanks, she was very good about it. She would sit there and watch TV with me until it was done.

I think it does, it helps keep her body heat in. She can still ruffle her feathers, it only covers her back.

I use vaseline on my polish roo's comb, waddles, and legs. It protects them from frostbite.

I think horses in general (and silkies) are like potato chips, can't have just one. lol I work on a large non-profit rescue farm. We have about 55 equines here at the moment.. Too many chips.

Yes, I will agree with this advice! I need one myself.

Actually, we do have a coop on the property that would be big enough for a TON of silkies but the darn RIR's, EE's and other mixed hens are living in it.. How to talk the farm owner into letting me have that coop for my silkies???

Must be something about those Polish roosters.. We had a WCB rooster also. The hens he lived with pecked the crap out of him almost every day, plucked all his head and tail feathers and he'd still act all macho, like nothing had ever happened.

First time they drew blood, rooster moved out. We didn't want him getting hurt.

I did learn that the nebulizers are very costly after spending some time with my dear friend Google.

I'm taking a ride to Walmart after work. They seem to have the best prices for humidifiers. I'll get use out of it myself also. I get a bloody nose when the air gets really dry...or cold. Like now.

That's one that I found online, a fair price also. Going shopping after work for one of these and Oxine will be here tomorrow. That stuff better work because I'm running out of ideas and I have sick chickies!

It should work. Just hold the chick in front of it.
