Silkie thread!

i know this is mainly a silkie group, but i'm posting this in a couple different areas to try and get as many opinions and as much info as i can.

i have a cuckoo maran chick, about a wk old, that has a small, hard mass on her underside. Its about the size of a small grape and its "hip" level or so...there is also a small spot between the mass and the vent that looks almost like a tiny vent and it started bleeding a little tonight when i cleaned up her pasty butt.
Has anyone ever seen this? I noticed that the other chicks had the same sort of hardness where the mass is on my maran, but it wasn't enlarged like hers. Nobody else has that tiny vent looking thing either....
I'll try and get a pic if i can. I wouldn't have noticed either as much if she hadn't been damp from getting wiped down.

Sad, news. Teriyaki didn't make it. Poor girl. No poop in the tub or urates.
I am so sorry for your loss

I am so excited I just got the deal of the year. Brinsea had some of their demo models on their facebook page first come first serve. And I got an 20 Octagon Eco for only $109! My DH just gave me the go ahead to get another incubator the night before and I was getting ready to get another Mini Advance, but figured I'd put my name in for one of these, just in case. And I somehow got the last one! I feel so lucky! Now to find some Silkie eggs to fill it up when it gets here

Great deal! Can't wait to see some pictures of your hatches!
poulettes. what triple antibiotic ointment are you using? quote from the chicken chick:

If using Neosporin, it is important that the ointment NOT contain a PAIN KILLER. Any ingredient ending in “caine” or “cane” (eg: benzocaine, lidocaine) can be toxic, if not fatal to chickens.
I just checked the box. Everything ends in "in" like Bacitracin, neomycin, Polymycin. So far her skin look a bit better. I will bathe her Sunday and get rid of all of her dead skin. I have been giving her a lot of BOSS, flax seeds, alfalfa and mana.

Recently a silkie breeder, that I know, had a chick hatch with part of its intestines protruding from the abdominal wall. Is it possible this may have happened with your chick and as the skin healed over the intestines it became a mass? The vent looking slit may have been part of the open abdomen at the time of hatch. If you did not have exposed intestines at the time of hatch, could this be something like a hernia?

Ok yall lol, question on breed of my half silkie....

I know the mother was a silkie, but no clue about the father (could be an OE/BB red, faverolle, barred rock?)
What do yall think?
His names Fuzzyhead...
His baby picture
Most recent pic, he's almost 5 months.

If your BR rooster has 2 copies of the Barring gene, he would have passed one copy to all chicks, if he has one then 50/50 chance at Barred chick. I would lean toward the Fav especially if Salmon colored. just my .02

Thanks :) my friend had given me the eggs & this was actually my 1st feather footed top knotted chicken :) so yea I was surprised when he came out of his egg!, he's leaning more towards Splash partridge coloring I supposed, but his front feathers & some others look awfully barred to me like you said

is it possible for a 1 wk old chick to get sour crop? My buff silkie was being inspected for pasty butt tonight and i noticed her crop seems rather large and definitely noticeable, and she keeps tilting her head back and looked like she was almost gargling water. They haven't had anything but unmedicated chick crumbles and water. She also went back and ate some more about 15 mins later and is active.
I would keep an eye on her, could have wry neck. if she keeps tilting her in a weird position that is what I would suspect.

Umbilical hernia. The hard spot is their belly buttons. So if it started bleeding that is bad. I would suggest seeing if a vet would stuff it back in and stitch it up but you are going to have to worry about infection since it's been open.

i think the little spot that was bleeding is the belly button. It didn't last very long or bleed too much. i put some neosporin on it and will keep an eye on it as well. The mass thing is what i haven't been able to figure out
