Maybe put an older one in with the babies? That way he has his big friend but is safe from being squished and starved by all the older ones?I have an interesting story for you all.
I have silkies (12) that just hatched Saturday. I also have some older ones still in the brooder about a month and two weeks old. They are all in the same brooder, seperated by a piece of cardboard. Well one of the older ones happened to somehow fly over and when my fiance went to check on them he saw the older one and moved him back over to his side.
We now there is one of the baby babies that keeps peeping LOUDLY like he is lost. All the others are content and happy and all is well with them. My fiance was like "it's almost like he realized he doesn't have a mother, ever since that big one hopped in." So I took the loud baby and popped him in with the older ones. (I know, I know, but I was supervising.)
After some initial purrs of "What is that?! Danger!" from the older ones, I fed them some mealworms and they were all pecking the ground. The little chick was quiet and trying to squeeze under the bigger ones. Oh my goodness it's the funniest thing. The older ones just ignore the baby, but the baby follows them around like they are all his mother! I've never even seen this before! They are all cuddled together, the baby sleeping amidst them all.
I put the baby back on the side with the other babies, but he started chirping and running around trying to find ... something... so I put him back with the older ones and he was content. I guess he just wants to be a big guy...![]()
OMG! I am laughing so hard! That is awesome!!Macho's guide to getting the ladies*.Step 1: When a hen walks up, don't directly look at her. Pose and have a mysterious far off look; allow her to admire your glory. Emphasize your manly chest*.![]()
Step 2: When she's had enough time, look seductively over your shoulder at her, again emphasizing your manly chest*. This is especially effective with a group of hens, as they swoon and titter over who you looked at.
Step 3: Now make your move towards them. As you walk, flex obviously, showing off your manly chest*, strong wings, and thick, soft feathers. But mostly your manly chest*. No hen can resist you now!
Step 4: Enjoy the attention of all the ladies and watch as the heads turn!
Say whattt?! Who's that hunk?
I think I'm in love. Did you see his manly chest*? *Disclaimer: Manly chest required. Results may vary.
