Silkies are supposed to have a higher protein food anyway, around 20%-22%, The agway hearty hen soy-free I just bought has 18% protein and I am going to mix it with the H and H organic soy-free starter/grower. A lot of breeders keep their silkies on starter/grower their whole lives and supplement with oyster shell. Too much calcium is bad for them because they are not consistent egg layers.Let me know how that goes. Do you know where company is located? I would like to go organic. If its higher in protein it would probably be good when they are molting, right?
Are the sizzles crossed with LF? If the silkie is pure but the sizzles are crossed with a larger breed that would be why they are larger.
No, just deep shavings and a little insulation in the coop.
They can be fragile so keeping them with LF may not work out, they are more succeptable to head injuries. They like to stand in the rain and if they are still when and the temperature drops they can get sick/die, their feathers don't wick off water like a normal feathered bird. They can't see predators well and are small enough for hawks to get them even full grown. If you can manage these things then your all set.
I feed a higher protein diet to all my poultry. I use Blue Seals Multi Flock start/grower which is 22% protein, From my turkeys down to my Bantams. I also feed Oyster shell free choice on the side for all.Silkies are supposed to have a higher protein food anyway, around 20%-22%, The agway hearty hen soy-free I just bought has 18% protein and I am going to mix it with the H and H organic soy-free starter/grower. I have had a couple like that. Usually pullets. My only sizzle I have had was larger than the silkie chicks after a while! I would think as long as she is acting ok I wouldnt worry too much. Three of these chicks were hatched from the same pen ( front, left and center) and the one in the back middle is a lot smaller than the others. The one on the right is about 3 weeks older.Silkie/sizzles --- I have 5 chicks 5 weeks old. They are all growing but one. I see her eat, but she isn't much bigger than she was at 2 weeks. She is a silkie. I have 2 sizzles that are growing like crazy!! She used to be the same size as one of the sizzles- now its 1/3 the size. Should I worry? She acts normal, but she seems to be a late- bloomer in the wing- flapping dept.
