Silkie thread!

Just hatched my first silkie chicks ( i have a showgirl rooster but this is my first time with chicks) I am curious to see what actually hatches I bought the eggs from ebay and the ad states that the eggs are from "blue, black, buff, splash, paint, white, partridge, showgirl, sizzle, frizzle showgirl" all free ranging together. here are the first 3 chicks (4 pics of each) and i have 5 eggs still pipping in the incubator. I am hoping they are all at least close to "correct" i have noticed that the 5th toe on the mostly white chick is a bit smaller than the other two chicks 5th toe and he is light skinned even compared to the other whitish chick who actually does have a bluish tint to his skin. how do you tell the comb type at this age or do you have to wait? super excited to learn more about silkies- my rooster is just a joy so i am hoping these little ones will be too.

Please help- Chick # 2 has the shell stuck to her bottom. Will that come off? It's been on an hr- she's been dragging the whole shell around. It looks like a thin piece of hair held to the shell with yolk. Can't open yet, have 2 pipped.

This is what it looks like- it's rear is all red and raw (the hair is not part of it, it crawled over it for the pic)

Just an update on my little, wry neck silkie:
She has not shown any improvement, unfortunately. She is kept by herself in a pet carrier with a towel over it. She sleeps mostly and sometimes rolls around disoriented. This is the 3rd day that I've been giving her extra vitamins to her food. (electrolytes/Vitamins, Vit B12, Vit E and selinium + a dusting of prednisone.) She will not swallow from a dropper so I continue to wet her food down until it is almost a paste. I try to get her to stand and then straighten her neck in my right hand. Then I hold the dish in front of her beak. Sometimes she won't even open her eyes to eat.........other times she sees the food and pecks hungrily at it. (Maybe 4-5 good beakfuls). Then she goes limp and curls up again & I try the process all over again (maybe 2 or 3 more times) until she just doesn't seem to have the energy to keep her eyes open. This is done about 6X a day. I really hope to begin to see improvement. She is pitiful and helpless and would starve to death if I didn't force her awake.

It's amazing how they are able to recover from this. I've had four in the last 2 years and all recovered. I use a straw to give liquids. Dip in water, hold finger over the other end and put beak in the hole. Takes a little practice to coordinate.

So happy my only paint hen has finally decided to lay an egg after six months of wry neck! !!! her neck is even starting to look better this eekend i am putting in the breeding pen with my black roo!!!

It is normal to drag shell and common to have nasty looking red spot on umbilical. If you get stressed and need to open the bator, do it quickly and mist inside with very warm water. Just a couple of short sprays. Or you can take the bator into the bathroom and run the shower on hot till you see steam in the room before opening.

Woke up this mornin to find this lil guy no longer with us...i think he got trampled by his LF brooder mates after treat time...note to self to watch for this. Hopefully little blackie wont meet the same fate
