Silkie thread!

I want one very pretty project? or just have the one?

I got quite the bunch out of what I hatched. About half and half with the bad single comb. Hard to tell on those if they will be hens or Roos. I separated the ones worth keeping and I'm selling the single combs as pets. I'll post a pic of one of the keepers.

Almost 2 weeks since I've posted on here.. 410 missed posts - wow!

Anyway.. skipping ahead a bit. I need some opinions on my one little blue silkie that is 10 weeks old. I thought boy since 2 weeks, but now I'm on the edge of maybe I'm wrong..

I want to know what you guys think.

It's not a huge deal either way, but I'd still like to know :)

Acts gender neutral.
So glad to see you back! I was thinking about you today and wondering how you were doing.

I definitely wouldn't call it a boy yet but my girls usually have a rounder looking crest at this age. Looks very nice either way. :D

Cull the ones that are not up to what is desired. Why sell defective birds to create more defective birds. Why would some one want to pay for what you do not feel is adaquate for you ?

I'm doing okay thank you :)

This group of chicks is about the slowest growing group I have ever had. Not sure if it was the food (I had them on fermented grower and not starter right away - but switched them when I noticed how slow they were growing) or what.

Curious for opinions from the rest of you breeders. What do you do with your sub-par birds? I assume this comment suggests euthanizing?

I wont euthanize healthy birds that arent up to standard. I made the decision to breed and hatch them so i feel like I have a responsibility to the ones that I dont want to keep for my breeding program. Most of mine go to non breeding flocks as pets. The roosters are always harder... I would sell them to someone that would use them to eat and some go to pet homes where they dont hatch chicks and use the eggs. Some will end up reproducing Im sure. I think the real question is if the parents of the birds producing things you dont want should be bred... I am trying to keep my breeding to a minimum and only breeding the best I have or can acquire. Im not saying this is the only "right" way but is the only way i am comfortable with for me. I cant see breeding 200 chicks to get 20 I love for breeding and kiiling the rest...
