Silkie thread!

We sell all of our pet quality Silkies, mostly on Craigslist. I can't see the enjoyment of killing a bird when someone else could love it as a pet.

I agree, that's about where I'm at. I'm not in it to make a bunch of cruddy quality chickens just because it's easy to hatch. I'm in it for my true love of the breed. I'm just starting but my eye is on the ultimate improvement.

Anyway.. skipping ahead a bit. I need some opinions on my one little blue silkie that is 10 weeks old. I thought boy since 2 weeks, but now I'm on the edge of maybe I'm wrong..

I want to know what you guys think.





It's not a huge deal either way, but I'd still like to know

Curious for opinions from the rest of you breeders. What do you do with your sub-par birds? I assume this comment suggests euthanizing?

I pet them out. My sweetest birds are often the ones that are lacking in one area or another. They have wonderful personalities and will make phenomenal pets for someone that will appreciate them or make great broodies for someone hatching flighty breeds. I have a couple of chicks with curved beaks and they are just little dolls, very nice looking chicks aside from the beak. If they are pullets, they'll be easy to find homes for....unfortunately, cockerels are much more difficult to place. The only time I will ever cull is if the chick or bird is suffering, that is heartbeaking to watch.

Looks like that way to me too. But 2 weeks ago it was so boyish!


Example. Same bird. Obviously was terribly messy from the feed, but still..

The new pictures are why I am second guessing myself. I am now leaning more towards pullet. 2 weeks ago I was so sure!

They make wonderful pets, no reason to kill happy healthy birds.
