Hi i wonder if anyone know the answer to this. I have a pair of white bantam Silkies which I keep indoors at the moment as I'm getting a new outhouse built. I was wondering whether I should fit a bird UV light near their cage for the moment. They are show bantam white Silkies. I have heard Sunlight and UV can turn their feather yellow. Is this true? Anyone experience this?
The Bird UV light will give them the right vitamins and nutrients from not being outdoors.

Any suggestions most appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Their regular food should supply them with their regular vitamins. I will supplement with red cell every now and then but my house silkie is fine without the uvb. People keep poultry in the house all the time without issues. Also, a starter/grower food is ideal for silkies rather than layer(too much calcium can damage their kidneys)... just throwing it out there

Thanks for your suggestions painted feathers. I'm new to Silkies and these are my first pair of show quality so I want to make sure they are getting looked after properly.

I'll not bother with the UV bird light in the meantime. I also have Malaysian Serama and they are o.k indoors.

The reason why I was asking is cause, the little hen in the photo, shes' just over a year old, has just laid 5 eggs during the last 7 weeks.
I know they can go broody easily. but she was broody when I bought her. Is this normal for Silkies?

thanks again.

Silkies aren't good layers most of the time. Have you checker her for any prolapsing or egg binding? One of mine just had to have surgery to remove a stuck egg. She may just be stubborn

mine went back to laying normally and layed two eggs a day apart, and now nothing

but I don't feel an egg so she's just not producing. It helps them to have a light source during the day though, without it it slows down or completely stops their egg production. So you could always put a light near them or on them during the day if they are in a dark place.

Hi Paintfeathers. Just checked her and there's no egg in her. I think it could be a light factor as they are getting a little daylight but not great. I've just started putting a normal spotlight on them for 4/5 hours a day. Only day 2 so don't expect to see alot of difference. She does seem alot more lively.

Hopefully this will help alittle.

thanks for your suggestions.

I have two things...

I go away for three days with two of my girls to a family function. When I left, everyone had tons of food, water and snacks. I get home to find my little SG cockerel looking at his chest! I hope it was because the slightly bigger birds (all hatched at the same time, but three of them grew like weeds

) hogged all the food, not because they pecked him in the head. I removed the bigger birds, and now all the ones he is with are the same size or slightly smaller. Will putting additional supliments in the water hurt the other birds? or should I isolate?

Second thing, with FF, is it okay to ferment feed that has had cracked corn added? Before I found out about all the awesome things FF does, I had bought and mixed Purina Flock Raiser and cracked corn.
