Their regular food should supply them with their regular vitamins. I will supplement with red cell every now and then but my house silkie is fine without the uvb. People keep poultry in the house all the time without issues. Also, a starter/grower food is ideal for silkies rather than layer(too much calcium can damage their kidneys)... just throwing it out thereHi i wonder if anyone know the answer to this. I have a pair of white bantam Silkies which I keep indoors at the moment as I'm getting a new outhouse built. I was wondering whether I should fit a bird UV light near their cage for the moment. They are show bantam white Silkies. I have heard Sunlight and UV can turn their feather yellow. Is this true? Anyone experience this?
The Bird UV light will give them the right vitamins and nutrients from not being outdoors.
Any suggestions most appreciated.
thanks in advance.
I will have to get one of those then because I only have an "emergency coop" with bedding (under I added vinyl). It might be too comfortable for her.
I have three girls broody right now... it's contagious lol.
So far I found 6 egg shells, but I haven't checked under mama if they are all alive. One more to go![]()
Silkies aren't good layers most of the time. Have you checker her for any prolapsing or egg binding? One of mine just had to have surgery to remove a stuck egg. She may just be stubbornThanks for your suggestions painted feathers. I'm new to Silkies and these are my first pair of show quality so I want to make sure they are getting looked after properly.
I'll not bother with the UV bird light in the meantime. I also have Malaysian Serama and they are o.k indoors.
The reason why I was asking is cause, the little hen in the photo, shes' just over a year old, has just laid 5 eggs during the last 7 weeks.
I know they can go broody easily. but she was broody when I bought her. Is this normal for Silkies?
thanks again.![]()
She should get 10 to 12 hours of lightHi Paintfeathers. Just checked her and there's no egg in her. I think it could be a light factor as they are getting a little daylight but not great. I've just started putting a normal spotlight on them for 4/5 hours a day. Only day 2 so don't expect to see alot of difference. She does seem alot more lively.
Hopefully this will help alittle.
thanks for your suggestions.
