Silkie thread!

Hey everyone I bought a silkie yesterday (she's 6 weeks old) and introduced her to my other chicks (who are 3 weeks old). She became an instant bully. She would chase them and peck at them really hard. I thought silkies were supposed to be sweet and tender. Can anyone give me any advice about her? Should I relocate her to a different home? I want her to be happy with the chicks, she really is a sweetheart to me.

It became a bully because it is bigger than the other chicks you have. All I have are silkies and I don't have a problem with them bullying each other and I have 3 week olds and 5 week olds together but my chicks are from my own flock. I have 3 silkie roosters and only one of them gives me fits every now and than but the other 2 are total sweethearts. Just give it more time if you really want to keep it but keep an eye on it so that it doesn't hurt the smaller chicks.

Not silkie related really, but wanted to share my morning visitor with everyone

The smaller of the two paint checks I got last weekend has been getting pasty butt. I've been checking her at least x2 each day and gently cleaning her when needed. This morning when I cleaned her I saw that she had a big "bump" like something was pushing from the inside of her vent. After cleaning her up I could see her vent moving and contracting but nothing came out. I massaged it. It doesn't look like anything is stuck inside but I'm worried about her. The area I could see is all red.

I checked on her just now (about 1.5 hours have passes). The bump has gone down but not gone altogether. She's acting a little lethargic. Should I do anything else other than keep a close eye on her?

I almost lost my Ziggy today (Polish, not Silkie, sorry)- one of my personal pets! She and her best friend (Phoenix hen) like to perch on some window glass panes in the shed that they are in until their new building is ready. They've been perching there forever. This morning, I found Ziggy stuck between two glass panes, smashed :(. Everything was limp except her head. I brought her in the house to take care of her. 4 hrs later, she can stand and shuffle around.

This pic wasn't taken today.
Glad you found her in time. I hope she recovers soon!
Thank you everyone for your kind words, they are very helpful. At least I still have Icelynn, now I guess she will be even MORE of a spoiled brat since she is the only chicken! At least unless this egg hatches, today at 10pm is hatch time! So probably tomorrow if it is still alive. I really hope so, I don't want to lose two in one week

I would call if it has a number on the back, or call a vet to ask. If you have another pet who has a homeagain microchip you can call poison control free of charge

He is a beauty... Man I want a turkey!

Good morning... is it safe to assume that this is a silkie?? Some of the 11 I got, do have more feathering on the feet... it was a free run bantam chick choice.... also, someone told me that bantams are mean... is that true? Someone else said they were not mean, lol...
Yep it's a silkie. No, not mean.. Very nice in my experiance.

When I introduce chicks of different sizes or in general.. I rub them together esp butt to face.and butt on the new chcks body (the glands)... to give the new chick the same smell. Makes them more acceptable. Not sure if this works in your case as t the new chick is the bully.. maybe rub her smell on them?? I also have in the past made a temp divider in the brooder to keep them seperated but still together.

I don't think so. There's nothing protruding, just a lump. I tried to get a picture but she's so tiny I just wasn't able to hold her and work the camera up close.

I have a blue rooster with gold leakage on his hackles. Other than that his type and everything is wonderful. Should I still use him? How hard is it to breed out the leakage?

Ok, a bit off subject, but I just received a Groupon email with the heading "Vent cleaning" and I immediately thought of my chickens.....I think I might need therapy...

I would pay for that...

The vent cleaning, not the therapy.. and besides WE don't need therapy. Everyone else does.

Thank goodness you found her in time! Hope she makes a full recovery.
Amen!

Looks like a silkie. I've had a couple of roos that were mean. Most are not. Mama hens are scarey!

Put something in the brooder to give the chicks a place to hide and give them more time to establish the pecking order.

You should always keep new chicks separated for a period of time before introducing. One reason is for biosecurity, if the new bird had some sort of illness, mites, etc. It would contaminate the rest of your chicks. Think of it as an obsevation period, to ensure good health :) Also, I personally wouldn't put chicks of that age difference together. Older chicks naturally will bully the younger ones. It's pecking order and has nothing to do with the breed. All breeds are this way. I keep my chicks seperated if they are more than a couple weeks apart in age. As they get bigger and more even in size then I will put them together, but not until after an introductory period. I will put the younger chicks in a dog kennel or cage inside of the older chicks run, for aproximately one week. This gives them the chance to see each other and get to know each other without being able to hurt the young ones. After a very bad experience ending in the near death of one chick, I learned this the hard way. :(

Agreed, we've only once added a new chicken without separation and was because she came from the same coop as the other two and it was a short period of time so there wasn't a big issue just that they made her sleep in the run the first might. But my other chickens I fenced off for a week, and the introduce using a flock block. And my next set will be done the same way, plus they will learn that this spot is their coop. I have 3 coops attached to a large run.
