Silkie thread!

Someone please answer
No they are not the same thing.

Oyster shell is a calcium substitute for laying hens. Grit is little rocks that break down food they eat. The rocks stay in the crop and grind it up.. because chickens don't have stomachs.

Oyster shell is soluble, which means it breaks down in water.
Grit is insoluble - meaning it does not dissolve in water.

Depends on what you are feeding them. Are you feeding them a layer blend? If so, extra oyster shell shouldn't be necessary. But if you are feeding them grower you should put oyster shell out when they are at the age to start laying. How old are your birds?

Well I do not have my birds yet but I'm just planning ahead but the ones I will buy shortly are around 6-7 months . And I was also wondering if all the food I feed my hens including grit is okay to feed to roosters

Benny...silkies don't really like all the calcium available in layer formula foods. I grew starter/grower their entire life and offer grit and oyster shells as free feed so they can regulate it themselves. I also offer a high protein hobby supplement. I feed mine a fermented feed but that's not necessary. Good luck with your birds! :)

At what age do Silkies typically start laying? I have my 3 month olds in a mixed grow out coop and wonder how long I have before I have to start separating them. Hopefully I will be able to sex them before long. I will try to get some pics on here this weekend for y'all to look and see what you think.
