This is my silkie named river. She has 5 toes on each foot!!! Fingers crossed she's a girl! She is 7 weeks old and definitely our favorite, so much personality!
How much did you trim? It is mostly the muffs on their cheeks that block their vision.
Not a chance. The Silkies and the hen that laid the green egg live in 2 different pens. lol And these were all eggs I had marked. All even collected around the same time. A day or two difference. I put the little green egg is in an incubator last night. It seemed like it was getting a little cold under the hens. The girls are so busy tending to their chicks now that the egg isn't getting proper care, I don't think. It zipped last night and rolled itself from one end of the incubator to the other over night!
Is there a chance a hen laid the egg and the broody snatched it? They will carry them a long ways.

RE: locking the girls in the coop - I lock mine in the coop every night yet they still don't seem to consider it 'home.' They always huddle up together (there are 5) on my deck. I go out each night to pick them up and carry them to the coop and lock them in. As soon as I open it in the mornings, they all pile out and never go in during the day, even in bad weather. I tried putting them in the coop one time during a bad storm and as soon as I walked away they all came back outside.
Any suggestions or is this normal behavior for silkies?

Our broody Surprised us!!! I had her on 3 decoy eggs until I could find fertile eggs for her( Roo was gone for 2wks.) to hatch......it had been 13 days or so when I found fertile eggs and removed the decoy eggs and set them aside in the house. I gave her the fertile eggs at 10:00 am and she hunkered down like a boss. The next morning, before I discarded the decoys I thought I'd candle them( my first time for all of this) and to my surprise and instant heartbreak they had been fertile and developing!!!! I'm a Murderer, how can this beeee?? We had sent our Roo away to Silkie Camp weeks before for Kung Foo fighting with me in the yard. So I panicked and was told to give them back, ya never know!?! So That's what I did.....and she hatched identical twins of herself and my Partridge Silkie!!!
The top photo is of the Momma (Scott) and the other egg belonged to Nugget the Partridge. The bottom photo is the new chicklets Poppy and Pinch!!! Eeeee....I'm not a murderer!!! Haa

I use sand in the run. It's very easy to maintain and I don't have to worry about supplying grit.

I just got two silkies today. Finally!!!They are 3 months old and I don't know the sex but I was told one was pullet and the other a roo.
There is really many different methods to accomplish this but since you don't have a run try just locking them in their coop for a week. Honestly I didn't but they have a run but do get to free range but my girls picked it up quickly and our Barred Rock some how got them thinking they could roost on the top rung so instead of watching them jump and fall all the time I built a special ramp. Good luckI have new coop no run attached and my ? is how do you all get your silkies to go in coop by themselves?
and how many of you are still picking them up and putting them in at night?
