Silkie thread!

My teacher was talking about how he wished we had more time to hatch quail and each of his students would have their own chick to carry around school and care for to demenstrate imprinting but there isnt enough time for that so I volunteered the 30 silkie chicks i have hatching in a few days :) so after they hatch I bring them to school and my classmates will have them for a week or so. Can't wait!
I guess a friend if his teaches at another school and he does it with great success. It would be for about 2 hrs during the school day and only certain people can

I was thinking of adding some sand to an area of the outdoor pen... inside is pine shavings and the bottom is dirt...

I hope it is okay to keep the different breeds together (I noticed some of you separate yours)... the hens (only 1 or 2 of the 3) will occasionally peck at one of the silkies, more rarely... ugh! Can't wait for them to be bigger...

Also, the silkies and pullets don't seem to want to be outside... I have shut the heat lamp off today... thinking they might go out and seek the sun... not... so I put a bunch outside... after about 45 minutes they all went back in... grrr...

I have new coop no run attached and my ? is how do you all get your silkies to go in coop by themselves?

and how many of you are still picking them up and putting them in at night?
I asked the same question a couple of posts before yours. I have to pick mine up every night.

Try to put a little( nightlight

) in their coop and wait until full dark to check on them. The light will attract them. That is probably why they come up on the deck in the evenings, attracted to your light. I use a solar powered Christmas lights inside the baby coop.

We ordered a $10 solar light from amazon that does the trick for almost all of our silkies. We have a trio of porcelain that love to sleep on the ground though.

So far on my May 11th hatch. I have 2 pips and one out. My porcelain failed to hatch last night as expected. I'm worried it's not going to progress. I had a partrige hatch today at 11. Didn't even see the pip. It hatched surprisingly fast :) It's drying off. Hope to get some pics soon. In the meantime I need another hobby!

RE: locking the girls in the coop - I lock mine in the coop every night yet they still don't seem to consider it 'home.' They always huddle up together (there are 5) on my deck. I go out each night to pick them up and carry them to the coop and lock them in. As soon as I open it in the mornings, they all pile out and never go in during the day, even in bad weather. I tried putting them in the coop one time during a bad storm and as soon as I walked away they all came back outside.

Any suggestions or is this normal behavior for silkies?

Check ar night for little brown or black bugs. If you have mites in your coop they will not want to go in. They know they are there. Crazy huh?

With Silkies I have found that what works for me is to leave all food inside the coop and don't help them out of the coop. They will go in and out to eat and will even go up a ramp eventually to their food (when they are finally trained). A little light inside the coop (like a battery powered or solar light) may help too.
