Silkie thread!

Are you sure you're not thinking of mottled colors? They have blue mottled and black mottled. Splash is just splash.
This is what it says for splash in the standard of perfection:

I don't know anything about what Cochin chicks look like when they're young, color wise, but I'm pretty sure your chicks are just plain blue and black like aoxa mentioned.
What makes you think they're black splash & blue splash? The little bits of white they have on their bodies?

Yes, I was confused. Mottled is what they are. And I'm not deciding based on what they look like, that's what the breeder told me when I bought them. But I got mottled & splash mixed up in my head.

I have a splash silkie and she's just about 2 wks old now. Cutest little thing!

Rockerhen - that's hallarious! I love that picture! Sorry about your other chicken...

OohLala - sorry about Chad!

Geez, that partridge color looks amazing in the silkies! I may have to find me one!

There is Mottled (black and white) and Blue Mottled (Blue and white).

Let me know if your birds do end up mottled. Is the breeder well known? Does she have pictures of the parent birds?

I have never seen mottled look black before.

The black do not look mottled at all to me.

I hate to bring this stuff up. I work with black mottled (we just call it mottled), and they look like this:

Where blacks look identical to your chicks above.

What cute babies!!!! I was told there were mottled in the bunch I was picking from when I got mine from the feed store but from looking at pictures I didnt see any that looked right for that color. It was pretty funny to sit on the ground with a huge batch of chicks trying to pick out first cochins and then trying to determine color. It will be interesting to see what color the blue one turns out. I didnt think it had enough like color in the right places to be mottled.

Morning all,

I'm new to Silkie love and have three 6 week old babi

es. I think one is a rooster. I'd love your expert opinions. What do you think? One pic is all three. Two have fuller crowns while one has a more upright crown and seems to the one that starts peeping whenever I pick up one of the other ones and take them away.

Yes mottled has a lot of white in just the right places to be mottled. :)

Usually it's at least 50/50 (white to blue or white to black).

Thank you! I think the mottled houdans are the cutest things. I have 20 on order to start over again with.

Going completely by gut and crest feathering (not always accurate.. I've had girls feather out like the middle one too).

I'd say middle is a boy.

I just got my first two silkie chicks on Sunday, they are a week old now and I think one may have trouble with her legs. She can walk and run but falls over a lot. She's also much smaller than the other chick and not as spunky. She is eating and drinking. Any ideas on what I can do to help her out?

Yes, she's a well known breeder. But I guess I will just wait and see when they grow.

I have 1 mottled houdan. Not sure on sex, but my DD16 thinks it's a boy and has named him Horace. He is a naughty bird. ;)
