Silkie thread!

What a hair doo! Lol
Hope your favorite girl is broody somewhere.

Hey there,

Don't stress yet. My fave girl "Sally" disappeared on me just Before Easter and then showed up Easter Sunday with two lil chicks in tow. They are good at hiding away when they have eggs to hatch!!!

Now that we see them in proper light, I'd say this chick is a blue.

They're all very cute!

Wow, she's looking good!

No, not really. lol Wasn't a lot of competition...again. I wish more people would bring splashes! And silkies in general! This time, once again, there were only 2 splashes. And the other splash entered was really a blue... I have no idea why the judge didn't correct that?

So, it was a no brainer that my cockerel was BV.
I guess I should be happy with those results...but to me, it doesn't mean much. lol I feel like it's the same as if I was showing a horse and I was the only one in the class = first place. That's no fun!

Sanna, maybe if your splash boy starts making some pretty splash babies, I can have one, and we can then compete them against eachother!

If Marbles is actually a girl, and she comes out looking like a superstar, what would your splash and her being a blue produce?

Hey justine where are you getting your mottled houdan chicks from ?? what did you name your to that you got from me i forget
Nova Scotia :) They are Pickles & Patty. Pickles is a boy for sure. Started crowing at 10 days old. Patty is yet to be determined, but I always thought girl.. Has small nares compared to her brother.
Yes, she's a well known breeder. But I guess I will just wait and see when they grow.

I have 1 mottled houdan. Not sure on sex, but my DD16 thinks it's a boy and has named him Horace. He is a naughty bird. ;)

For what it's worth, I think Horace is a girl. Small nares, skinny legs, and upright hairdo. But that stance is so boy!

Be prepared. Houdan males are known shin kickers. They are cowards too. They wait until your back is turned. So really they are calf kickers.

They can be trained out of this with stern management. I do not recommend cuddling your male houdans. This makes them so not afraid of you and even more saucy. :p

Gigi.. Boy was he a saucy boy. He was also incredibly paranoid. He always thought someone was following him, and would flip out. So I put his hair up. I think that is why he hated us ;)

He never kicked me. He did my fiance, and my neighbour (who kicked him back and adored Gigi.. 1 week after he kicked him, he went back over and just hung out with the neighbour. The neighbour even named him!)

I've been wondering something about my new silkie chicks. I have four porcelain/buff silkies at about 4-5 weeks. Two of then have a raspy sounding way of communicating. Almost like a scratchy voice. The other two very clear and high pitched. Is this a male female difference?

hi I raise silkies I have all female now however I did have three males I had to re home them when they began to Crow. raised them from babies. I never noticed a difference in communication. however there was a great deal of difference in there crests. my males although round and full created there crests swoop back and my females are more perfectly round. the difference was obvious at a very early age. my females crests being completely round and the males crests although round swooped toward the back. this was more easily seen from the side view of the birds. this was one of the only differences I've seen between my males and females. hope this helps. good luck.

Thank you. I will definitely be keeping an eye on their crests as they grow. My favorite chick is larger than the others and is one of the raspy peepers. I'm hoping it is a hen since I can't keep roosters.

aoxa - I'm not really sure what you're getting at with the houdan. Are you saying they're aggressive or have cocky little attitudes? That's the only one that we have and I told her & my other kids not to get too attached b/c if we end up with too many roos and they start to cause problems or are too noisy and the neighbors are complaining to the landlords, then we will be getting rid of any trouble makers.

I'd say cocky rather than aggressive.

I had 4 of them, only one was like that. A friend of mine has one of the brothers, and he is also like that. On the Houdan thread, a lot of others (pretty much everyone I recall) had one like that.

We had a downpour that lasted about 10 minutes in which we got a half inch of rain yesterday. The silkies were out, of course, while we were gone for a bit, and a few got soaked but loved it.
This is one of my 3 month old chicks.

On a much less humorous note, my very favorite girl, the one in my avatar, is missing. Haven't seen her in 2 days. No trace of an attack, but I fear that's what happened.

Thank you Sherry!
Your chick will probably turn out very sweet. Definitely think about getting 2 more companions for this one to snuggle and sleep with.
Mandycarlo- I also got real excited after I found my first silkie so when I went to feed store and seen another poofy headed chick, I got it too. It was yellow with light legs and skin. Come to find out it was a Sultan. You live and learn I guess. Lol. I am enjoying reading and learning about the breed.

littlecritters- Right now it is in the brooder with 2 gold comets and 1 black australorp. I want to get some more to put in a separate pen with this one. :)
