Silkie thread!

I was just curious what color my baby silkie will turn out to be. I don't know if its too early or not, but she's starting to get black and white stripes on her wings. Both her parents were white and one if her siblings was like her and the other two looked like they would be reds. I'm excited to see what she'll look like. She's my first silkie so sorry for the naive-ness. Haha. Here are some recent pics.

Sorry for some of the low-quality pictures.

This is another full sibling to your baby.

I thought so. I'm very excited to see how mine turns out. Only thing I'm a little bummed about is the middle toe on it's left foot. I thought I had those curled toes fixed, it was looking good. All toes were straight. Then several days later the middle toe turned sideways...

They're two weeks old now. I can't imagine I can fix that toe anymore. Oh well. At least we have one straight middle toe!

Hi, posted this https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/297632/silkie-thread/35350#post_11278338 a couple of days ago, and by doing some research was very worried about mareks but now I think could be a severe leg mites infestation, Im so sorry and ashamed about this boy bad situation, but this is our first experience with chickens and did not realized it was the problem, to tell the truth I thougth that was the normal appearence of a chicken foot (how stupid!). My questions are : Is this actually a case of leg mites? could leg mites cause him to be unable to walk? If not something else is going on, but I have to start by stopping the infestation, how to do it? Ive read that vaseline works, what your experience and opinions are? and finally can anyone send me a picture of a healthy silkie s leg/foot?
Thanks so much!

Looks like scaley leg mites. My birds had this when I started out with chickens also. I felt terrible, but I suppose these things happens.. I used vaseline. Just rub it on every day. The vaseline suffocates the mites. It makes a little bit of a mess and it took a long time to get rid of those little pests, but it did work. My chickens looked worse than yours.

I never tried the Nu-stock, you could give that a try also.

My curled toe chick had the foot shoe thing I did, but I dont' think it is workign, it appeared that he managed to curl his toes inside the show. what did I do wrong?

Definitely scaley leg mites, I would give him a bath in flea and tick shampoo and let him soak in it for 10 minutes or so, then after he is rinsed and dried coat his legs in first vetrx and them vaseline to suffocate the mites. Check the rest of him for mites, especially his face. If they are on his face too you can do the same thing, vetrx then vaseline. I would keep applying vetrx and vaseline for a while, until it starts to look better. If it doesn't look better, try applying a dose of frontline. Here are some pictures of healthy chicken legs, per request.

you need to make it tighter. try pressing the tape down between each toe, lets see if I can find a picture of my chick's boots.

I just had a chick with this same problem. I tried the "shoes" but didn't have any luck. Someone posted a link for a taped foot. I ended up using masking tape on the bottom and the top. It worked great. I changed it every other day for a week and you can't even tell it had a problem now.

yeah the picture I posted was using vet wrap on the top and bottom and pressing in between the toes to keep them straight. But paper tape may work well too, it doesn't hurt when you take it off

I used band-aid on my chicks feet. Just taped the toes in between the band-aid pieces. The tape wore off in about two days, then put a new one on until toes were straight.

Ok, well, I was afraid to get the sticky part of the band-aid on the toes, but perhaps that is what I was supposed to do. plus it is slippery and he's slipping all over the place, poor thing. I'm afraid I may have to do his legs next if this keeps up. :(

I"ll do the tape in the morning again. it seems to be a two person job.

Tell me about it! I was forced to do Cleo's feet by myself, not easy! Especially on such a wiggly fayoumi!
