Silkie thread!

Hello! I am looking to get some Silkie chicks from this girl. Below is a picture of the ones I have to choose from. She wants $5 a piece for them ( I know kind of pricey) I have one hen Silkie names Estes right now and I want more. What colors are these guys and which ones do you think I should get. They are bantams, and so is the ones I have right now. I want a few of them I think, but only if I can get an array of colors. What colors do you think they are? Which ones should I get. How can I tell a hen from a rooster if I get some. I have to talk my parents into it first so I have a couple of days to get your opinion. Can you tell me what colors you see and what they are called so I can pick a variety. I already have a buff and dont want another one!

$5 is not pricey, I bought my rooster as a day old chick for $10! Watch out for that large white one to the left, looks like she threw a cochin in there with the silkies so don't pick that one out! Does she have pictures of the adults? That box and bedding look pretty gross

... as for the chicks, the striped brown ones look partridge, the lighter white ones look wither splash or white, the grey looking ones are blue and that dark one in the front left is probably a black. But if your looking for good quality, check their feet for 5 toes on each foot, good foot feathering, which means the 3 first toes all have feathers, and good spacing. I will post a picture of my rooster's feet when he was a chick. Also check and make sure their skin is black, I can tell that light one is probably a cochin beacuse it's skin is pink. You won't be able to tell male from female until they are much older, adn then you can post pictures and we can help with that

That black one in front looks like it has messed up feet, so I wouldn't pick that one.

Hi guys,
This is my first ever time Showing poultry. I have a few of my favorite Silkies that I am entering. I have given them their first baths and nail trims. They all have a lot of feathers coming out of the shafts (not sure if that is the proper term or not). Any advice, I don't want to pull them off! I need some advice. I am a true newbie and pretty nervous about my first shows! The first show is only 5 weeks away!! Thanks in advance!!
Don't stress! It's really not that hard, I quickly discovered at my first show. lol The worst part is waiting for your birds to be judged. Then the other bad part is waiting for the show to be over so you can take your birds home. lol
Give your birds a bath the day before the show. Sometimes I bathe two days before, depending on what kind of time I have left after work for all the bathing and blow drying.
Sometimes they drop a few feathers. If they're dropping a lot, they could be moulting.

Bring your own feed and water, some baby wipes to wipe off any messes on the birds. Sometimes they poop on themselves. lol What else...? Don't give you birds water until they have been judged so they don't dip their crests in the water and make a mess. Those are the first things that came to my mind.
Anything else you can think of, just ask!

Have fun at your first show!

First off...I don't think the font needs to be quite that big.

I think everyone could see it well if it was a little smaller.
$5 is not pricey for a chick at all. I sell mine for $8 per chick.
For the colors of the chicks, I think PaintedFeathers got them right. I'm wondering about the little dark one in the bottom left corner, the one with a light spot on its head. I'm not sure if it's black? Or just not a good quality black. And I agree on the foot, doesn't look like a good foot. I'd stay away from that one.
The one with the pink beak is probably not a Silkie, at least not a 100%. Silkies have black skin and 5 toes. The one on the bottom right almost looks like a different breed also. Look like it has hard feathers coming in on it's wings? So when you're picking out chicks, definitely check for 5 toes and black skin! My personal favorites are blues and splashes. If you don't know what all the colors look like, I would recommend going on Google, and typing "splash silkie" or whatever color you wanted to see. The color choice is a personal preference, I think. Everyone likes different things.

I like the blues and splashes, someone else likes a buff, someone likes a white.
Good luck talking the parents into letting you have more Silkies! They make great pets.

My babies are getting bigger! They're about 6 weeks now. I'm still convinced that they're all cockerels. Hopefully I'm wrong.

This little guy found himself a worm and ran around with it in his mouth for the longest time. lol

Nice pose from the self-blue.

And then there's the mutt chick, Spot...just because she's cute and she's the only pullet.

Silkie Hatchers.....got a question. What humidity do you LD and keep your eggs at? I usually do not have a problem but the last couple I did. I had humidity around 45-50 ..temp 99..and the liquid inside the eggs got goey and the chicks died..one even zipped but was not able to pop out of the shell...on the others it seemed like the inside of the egg/chick dried out. I have always done mine like I mentioned above and don't know what changed. I am thinking the humidity should be higher...right?
I incubate around 40 degrees and up to 65 - 70 in lockdown.
Playtime in the day pen. ALL of the Silkies came out today :) OH- I'm still trying to tell if that little blonde is an Izabelle. She has faint lavender in her tail and crest- she's from a group of Catdance. If you know- please tell me :) I hope that she is. They are 4 months old.

Yeah he is, thanks! I think I am going to give him to one of the girls here at the farm. I got her hooked on the poultry shows, we've been traveling together to each show. She doesn't have any show quality birds and I've been helping her find a nice one. Problem is, she can't take one home as she already has plenty of pet chickens and mom wouldn't be too happy with more chickens. lol So, what we all agreed on, was that the girl can have a show bird (or two) and keep it here at the farm.

I was almost thinking of selling the self-blue chick because we'll have too many roosters. But I REALLY don't want to sell him. So this solution will work just fine!
lol.png
I'll just have to find homes for two of our PQ roosters to make room for these cockerels and hope that this little guy will be nice enough to show.
