Silkie thread!

can you tell at about 1 to 2 weeks if a silkie is going to be a sizzle or a frizzled silkie? I have one that has the frizzled wings and curious if this was too young to know. I know for sure its not a reguler silkie

Would love a blue bearded silkie to add to my small flock I'm in Loganville GA. I swear there has to be silkie folks around here, but I must not be running in their circle or something...hard to find. I could order from My Pet Chicken, but there is no beard guarantee. Any ideas?

If so - it is a free posting website, they have no feedback so it is always buyer beware. Make sure you are getting what you think you are getting, its on you to select what you want. The top listings are the latest, further down are the older ones. When you reply via email they send an encrypted email address so the person you are responding to does not get your email address. If you respond outside of the listing you will be sending them your email address.

As with any ads you will want to read the ad - look at pictures (if they have any) and decide if they sound legitimate. You can email and ask for pictures of their adult birds, the chicks, ask them any questions you need so you can figure out if you are getting what you want. A lot of people have hatchery birds - no shame in that except if you want to show them. If you want showable birds you will want to check for disqualifications on the parents and the chicks (toe count, wings, foot feathers, etc) - if you want Bearded you will need to check for that too. Read up on this thread and get an idea of what color the chicks are now - and what they will end up being if you want to select for color. If you want to get a certain color you will need to make sure they have the colors separated into breeding pens, mixing colors can be real surprises when they grow up. I am mixing on purpose - and my Partridge Chicks look Buff now - for the most part. My Silver looks.. odd... The one White was gold as a chick, the other White was silver/white...

Most important: go out and get you some Silkies!

Thanks I'll give it a shot

Hi,
I have a question and hope it is appropriate to ask in this thread.
I have long admired this breed but stayed away because I do not extra space for another run/coop.
I recently purchased two silkie chicks as company for a lone chick.
At the time, I thought. I'll just sell them later.......Of course, now they have slipped right into my heart.
Is it possible they would be safe in with my LF chickens....I would not want them to get hurt .
I am thinking when they are full grown of course. I have mostly Orpingtons.

Thank You

I have Orpingtons in with two silkies in a shed coop and my two silkies are fine. Make sure you have at least two feeders! They do hold their own after about 4 months of age with other chickens unless the other ones are totally aggressive. Make sure they don't get pecked on the head (wry neck) or bullied. A little pecking order business is OK but not bullying (when they don't back down and keep attacking).

You can take your lowest, most timid hen and put her in with the silkies for a week or two and then when the silkies join the flock they will not be the only new one. Covered kitty litter pans work well for nest boxes on the floor if yours are up high. Give them some stepping stones so to speak up to the roost and if your roosts are super high then they can cuddle on the floor together...you can install a very low roost also.
