Silkie thread!

Hi,
I have a question and hope it is appropriate to ask in this thread.
I have long admired this breed but stayed away because I do not extra space for another run/coop.
I recently purchased two silkie chicks as company for a lone chick.
At the time, I thought. I'll just sell them later.......Of course, now they have slipped right into my heart.
Is it possible they would be safe in with my LF chickens....I would not want them to get hurt .
I am thinking when they are full grown of course. I have mostly Orpingtons.

Thank You
if you slowly introduce them should be fine. But each chicken is different. If you can somehow seperate them in the one coop using an x-pen or something that would help so they can interact without harm. or you could go the house silkie route if it doesn't work out haha

Welcome to the addiction! They are the sweetest things! Do you still have the lone chick with them? You can leave them all together to grow up and introduce them as a group.

I raised one Silkie chick (hatchery quality) last year with a bunch of other mixed chicks (bantam and regular size) - she has been with my chickens ever since. She did need a "stepping stone" to get up on the roost with them. If yours have bigger crests (breeder quality) they may not be able to see the roost - so give them a cuddle spot on the floor where they won't get pooped on. The cutest thing was when they were all sleeping (probably a week old) she was making the "nighty night" trill for the other babies (same age) and they were sleeping underneath her. That should have given me a big clue what sex - but I wasn't sure until she laid an egg - and promptly went broody.

You don't have to worry about getting wry neck from being pecked on if they don't have vaulted skulls (a bump on top - not common on hatchery birds). Mine didn't have a vaulted skull and her crest is practically non-existent so she sees just fine.

HI-I think I counted my incubator days wrong. I set them on the 15th. I thought they were due today. Do I count the 15th, or after it's been 24 hr (the 16th) If I was wrong, and the date is tomorrow, will the extra day of lock down hurt them? Thanks. Pam Pittman

Hi,

Counting days is tough sometimes, people say if you set them in the morning you count that day as day one - if you set them in the evening you count the next day as day one.

However - locking down the egg early does not hurt them. I have read that anytime after the 14th day those embryos are moving around on their own - so turning isn't so crucial after that time. The way I counted Wednesday was lockdown (18 days) and they are due to hatch tomorrow. (21 days).

Good luck, and lots of
