Silkie thread!

Was your 5 week old Silkie added by itself, and was it a girl or a boy? That makes a difference. Singly added females will ALWAYS be picked on - even if they are the toughest of their old cage. Usually until they fight back - but Silkies don't always fight back.

I found my SLW were the meanest birds to any newcomers. I have never had Red Sex Links, although I had some Hatchery "Rhode Island Reds", those were mean too.

Introducing birds by pairs or trios usually is better for the harmony of the flock. The newcomers will defend each other from the bullies - and hang out together for awhile.

My new silkie girl layed an egg this morning, I dont have an incubator and I know its fertile. She is the only one laying and isnt broody. What should I do with it?
Put it in the fridge for eating,or if you really want to hatch it you could buy an incubator, try to encourage broodiness in one of your hens or find someone with a broody hen that you can slip it under...goodluck

Maybe lots or straw, enclosed place to lay (nesting box works), and leave the eggs for a few days if she doesn't lay on them but if she lays on them, leave the eggs for as long she wants them:) that should work... Anything to add????

How do you encourage broodiness?
I put about 5 golfballs in a nest where they usually lay. If they see lots of "eggs" then something triggers in the brain "Its safe to hatch chicks here".. and off they go.

I don't leave real eggs because in this heat they would spoil. (we are at 85 now.. expected to be "around" 97 today.. yuck!

Doesn't work for all breeds, but so far the silkies have always obliged..
